    Default Phase 2 Eating

Well I started phase 2 of eating mushy food. Have to tell ya seems a lot harder than the liquid phase. 4 Oz of food 3x a day. I've only had Greek Yogurt, Pastina, Applesauce, Cottage Cheese, some creamy soups and Sweet Potato. I ordered Red Lentil soup the other night and boy it went down so smooth without feeling full or anything I finished the whole thing, not thinking 4 oz only. I think i polished off 8 oz in no time, and boy was I in pain. Pain, nausea, heart racing, and unbelievable fullness for hours. Pacing the floors just to try and get relief. Will never do that again for sure. Now for work, i've been packing 4 oz meals for breakfast and lunch. When eating I full like i have chest pains. I fell it all going down, not sure if that is normal or not. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, not 100% sure. Maybe it just takes time to feel better, considering I haven't ate in a while. Like this afternoon I had 4 oz of Pastina and my chest was hurting while eating. Only happens when I eat or drink too much. Plus I seem to be stuck at 233 lbs. Just wanna get some feedback.

Are you chewing well and eating slooooowly? I did the same thing the first time eating soft food and oh boy, that pain cured me. I got into the habit of putting my spoon down in between bites, it would take at least 30 minutes, still does.

Do you stop at the first sign of feeling full? I don't care if I've measured out an exact amount, if I get a 'full' signal (my nose runs LOL) I stop immediately. Just a few things that come to mind. HTH

I'm doing a quarter of a spoon full of food, but its usually one right after the other. Only so much you can chew with Pastina. I was one of those eaters that when food was in front of me, it was like a race. I basically pelican gulped my food, if that makes sense. Need to change habits.

    Hi there

I think slowing down the eating might help. It's quite hard to get used to but you will certainly pay the price if you don't (as you already have found out).

Have a small amount - chew it (even if it doesn't really need chewing) then put down your spoon/fork, whatever and wait. You need to make your whole meal (such as it is) last for 30 mins. It seems like an eternity but you really need to get the hang of it for when you are cleared for all foods.

My full sign is hiccupping. If I hiccup once, I stop eating because the next mouthful will be one too many.

    Hi Figgy

Right now your stomach is the size of a pencil and you need to put your spoon down between each bite. Use a very small spoon (like expresso spoon) and take you time to eat. Plus if you have pain when eating soft food, you might want to go back to full liquids until you feel better.
I had to wait one more week on full liquids before going back to soft food. I did check with my surgeon at the time, he said to go back to full liquids and wait until I felt better. One week later it was fine.

Also, you need to focus on protein, sweet potato or pastina are just full carbs with no protein. In full liquids I was mixing meat with veggies to make soups.
Eatings carbs will always allow you to eat more, that not the point here.

Weight loss is not linear after bariatric surgery, stalls are normal and expected. So do not worry about the weight at that stage, focusing on nutrition will help more on the long run.
I had surgery in Asia because I was living there at the time, the first diet plan they gave me was made for Asians (lots of carbs, rice, bread, pasta etc). I do not have the same metabolism and eating too much carbs would slow a lot the weight loss, even stop it at times. I did correct it quickly, was not extremely low carbs, still had veggies with carbs (carrot in soup for example, or pureed, but always mixed with a protein) but for sure was not eating pasta or sweet potato for dinner. It took me two years to reach my surgeon's projected weight loss, eating loads of carbs I think I would have never been able to get there...

    Take care

Yep, you are eating too fast and probably too much for your pencil-like stomach.

Eating a "meal" should take about 30 minutes, setting a timer helped me.
Sometimes I still set the timer, just to check, because I too have a tendency to eat way too fast.
Eat with that tiny spoon Sandra told you, take a bite the size of your pinky nail and put it in your mouth.
Then put your spoon down and start to chew, half a minute, even with food that don't need chewing.
    Swallow.
Then wait at least two minutes, some doctors even say five.
    Watch and feel what happens.
    Does it agree with you?
    Does it get stuck?
    Does it go down easy?
After the waiting, take your spoon and repeat the process.

    Yes, it is a nuisance.
But it is really necessary, we all have to learn to eat again.
Listen to your body and start recognizing your own "full signal"
That can be anything from sighing, burping, coughing, watery eyes, runny nose...
You will learn yours soon, if you pay attention.
When you feel your signal STOP eating.
    Not one bite more.
Not even if it is the last one on your plate.
    Stop eating right away.

You will get the hang of it, really.
For now it is a learning curve, as you already noticed.
    You will get there!
    You can do this!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

THIS is all such great advice in the beginning (AND AGAIN later).

I still tend to eat too quickly -- and then I have the pain and the dreaded "toad froth" and I'm 20 months out.

    Also, what is pastina?

The key is to stop eating at that first feeling of full. Eat another bite and you are going to feel horrible.

And don't worry, this phase won't last. Before long you will be able to eat healthy, smaller, meals no problem.

My other advice is to only weigh once a week so the fluctuations don't drive you crazy. They did me, and my kind hubby hid my scale and gave it back every Monday. He was sick of my whining.

First of all, pastina, might not be a good choice for 2 reasons; it can't really be chewed and goes down "whole" and it's a really a no nutrient food. I'm Italian and it's one of the first foods that babies ate in the day, fulled them and gave them their first taste of carbs...lol...

Listen to your "tool" it will tell you how much and how quickly to eat and you don't always have to finish 4-6 ounces of food at a time. You'll find your way, it takes time and we're all different! Try the yogurts, chili (Wendy's was great early on) refried beans with cheese and a little non fat plain Greek yogurt on top, ricotta cheese sweetened with your choice of sweeteners and some applesauce. I stuck to really soft foods for a longer time than most. I also liked tuna fish w/mayo or canned chicken (which I hate now) Continued success and try the following website for some great food ideas, theworldaccordingtoeggface, bariatric eating.
