Default Talk to me about the 3-week stall...

Y'all! I KNOW it's a thing. I know the pneumonia and related medicines (steroids) have not helped. I know the stall is common at 3 weeks. I've been stagnant weight-wise since starting the steroids at post-surgery day 10. I think the steroid impact and then moving into the 3 week time-frame all culminated in this extended plateau.

The good side is that I'm really really thinking about water and walking and working on nailing those critical pieces. This has been harder than I thought, because I learned that I'm not a good daytime water sipper -- I tend to drink a lot of water in a sitting multiple times a day. Of course this isn't really possible now, and that was a lesson that needed some behavior change. I'm on it now. Truly, I thought this would knock me off the plateau but three days in of great water and I swear the damn scale just went up a pound.

The eating parts are fine and I'm doing great with limits, worked through the phases to normal foods, and feel great. I do think I'm losing some inches but didn't get pre-op measures -- stuff just definitely fits better. But the scale doesn't lie. And right now, it is not validating anything I'm doing.

The bad side is that mentally I am sort of consumed with worry that I've messed something up, that I'm just not allowed to lose weight due to some universal rule. I need to know that staying the course will work. I mean, it will work, right? If I follow the rules, this works?

Talk me down from the ledge! What were your experiences?

The three week plateau is a real thing.
You need to relax and wait to finish your course of meds, only look at the scale after you are done with your treatment.
No worries, it will go away after a short treatment.

Antibiotics and prednisone make me gain weight, and if I gain less since the sleeve, it will still show on the scale.
If you can, take some probiotics to help your guts get better after the antibiotics.

    Take care

O Hosh, this can be so frustrating!
But when you are sure you are following the rules to the tee, patience will do the trick and the scale will move again.
You can't mess up anything in those couple of weeks, really messing things up can be done, but that will take months, if not years.
So, just follow your surgeon's guidelines, which will probably come down toy the clear liquids first, then the thicker liquids or pureed foods, then the soft food stage, followed by the solids.
In which stage are you now?

The eating and drinking takes time, even when you are busy, you have to sit down and take your time eating your meal until you are finished.
A meal will take about 20-30 minutes and it is important you take that time.
No drinking with your meal, stop drinking 30 minutes before till 30 minutes after you are finished.
Make sure you meet your fluid intake requirements.
    Take your vitamins, exercise.

    But you will be fine!
    Really.
As long as you follow the rules, you will loose the weight.
Stalls happen unfortunately and are really annoying.
But you will get through it.
    Promise!
English is not my first language, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

    Hosh,

    Sandra and Dutchie nailed it.

There are times when I have to take prednisone and it results in weight gain. I just keep doing what I know works and it rights itself.

Stalls are normal. Time takes time. Sometimes I just needed to remind myself to breathe and relax.

It will get better, I promise you ;-)

Steroids in any dose or delivery of said steroids are the devil! I despise them. As soon as my neurologist says she's ready for me to have them (hopefully within the next month because I'm over feeling horrible), I'll be having 1,000mg of solumedrol via IV for 3 to 5 days. I am so sorry that you've had this battle with pneumonia and have had to deal with antibiotics and steroids. I know it's not fun. Just get better and don't look at that scale right now. Get someone to hide it for you.

As long as you are meeting your liquid and protein goals you are not messing up.

Stalls are frustrating, I know, but it's part of the process. They make no sense as you are eating practically nothing. My #1 advice for a newbie (besides having a positive attitude) is to weigh yourself only once a week while losing. Otherwise you drive yourself nuts. Keep a journal. Write down that once a week weight. Take measurements every few months. It's so much fun!

You're doing great, keep it up!

Don't despair Hosh, it happens and you will get through this. I'm sure it's the meds. I had the dreaded 3 week stall and after looking back on my daily journals, I realized I wasn't getting enough water. I am a firm believer in keeping track of what I eat/drink, it has helped me so much.

I don't weigh myself every day, I weigh once a week. My body is fluctuating so much right now, I don't want to disappoint myself with a daily weigh. You've done a good job, as long as you're getting your liquids and protein, things will kick back in.

    You can do this!

I hope that you off that ledge after all the good advice above. :-)

So frustrating isn't it?! You are doing all that you are supposed to and those darn scales are not moving!

You are not messing up at all.
Medications can really affect our body in so many different ways.
Lose the scale for a while, keep doing what you are doing - because it is exactly right!

Sipping water all the time took me a little while to get used to also. I just make sure that I have a bottle with me at all times and every time I look at it I take a sip. It does become a habit. Now if I happen to leave the house without water I miss it straight away and have to go buy one!

Glad I am not the only one. Haven't lost more than a pound in a week or so. Really really really aggravating but still down 25lbs in 3.5 weeks so I will take that win and settle for hopefully a day or two more of this "stall".

Had no idea about this 3 week stall thing--figured it was just me, glad to see I am not the only one going through it right now.

Good luck and keep up the good work!
