    Default Can we take antibiotics?

I went to my dentist appointment today. They're taking 3 teeth out on the 25th and she asked me if I can take antibiotics after my weight loss surgery... I said "I think so?" but wasn't sure. Has anyone had to have antibiotics for anything? Can you take the pills or did they have to give you liquid? I'm allergic to penicillin so I hope it doesn't have to be liquid. All the liquid antibiotics that aren't penicillin taste like liquid chalk. Then I will have 18 teeth left to take out. I'm hoping they take them all out at the same time. Anyways, back to antibiotics. I'm curious if any of y'all have taken antibiotics in pill form?

Yes. I'm not a medical person, but I've taken them since surgery.

It is totally fine for you to take antibiotics and many are available in liquid form if you have trouble with pills. With the extent of the dental work planned, you absolutely HAVE to take antibiotics. The risk of infection outweighs the small risk of stomach irritation you may experience. I would take a probiotics supplement also to help balance out your gut flora.

I'm glad it's possible because I am desperately in need of this. If I get another all day migraine just from chewing, I swear I may take the tooth out myself!

I had antibiotics very early on. They helped to save my life.

I’ve had them twice since about 6 months after surgery. I take the liquid (even though I don’t like the taste) because I tolerate it better and I know I won’t have to take it forever.

I hope you’re feeling better soon after your dental problems are dealt with ;-)

Teeth pain is so awful! I hope you will find relief very soon!

I had unfortunatly several rounds of antibiotics since the sleeve. I had very strong IBS before the sleeve, it got better a few weeks post op (the sleeve side effect being constipation, I was lucky it did stop my issues) but each round of antibiotic starts my GI issues and the only way to help is to take a really strong probiotic to help.
I did develop gastritis after the fourth round of antibiotics in November, but I was also taking cortisone and other meds for asthma at the same time.

Antibiotics are life savers, but the side effects are really bad for me. So I would recommend to always take it with food, and probiotics all the way, even after you stop the antibiotics, because our gut flora takes a while to get better.

    Yes, definitely take the probiotics.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Probiotics are live strains of "good" or "helpful" bacteria and yeasts that improve the health and balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. Antibiotics kill off harmful bacteria at the site of an infection but also unfortunately kill off some of the "healthy" bacteria that lives in your gut. Taking a probiotic - in the form of a pill supplement - helps to restore and improve the normal balance of you digestive tract. They come refrigerated or not (some insist refrigerated is better) and in all price ranges. A colleague who is a GI physician always recommends Align brand probiotics. They are readily available at Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS, grocery stores, not-refrigerated and reasonably priced.

Those past years, research did show that many health issues are directly linked to our guts.
So to keep it healthy we need prebiotics (fiber) and probiotics (yogurt, miso, fermented things). But when you need to "repair" the guts, it's better to take it in pills because the concentration is much higher.

There is many many brands, and when I shop in the US I buy this one https://www.vitacost.com/now-foods-p...arian-capsules I really find it efficient but it needs to be kept in the fridge.
I usually go for at least 10 strains, the one I just ordered in France has 16, we'll see if there is a difference...

I usually start a strong probiotic the first day of the antibiotics and finish the bottle even if the course is ten or fifteen days, so one month of probiotics to repair the damages. It's better to take it on an empty stomach with just water, in the morning, and wait a little until you eat, just to make sure it doesn't get "killed" by the vitamins or meds.

Actually talking about meds, taking a PPI also does damages on our guts...not so obvious compare to antibiotics, but still...that's why I just ordered a stronger probiotic, I can tell my guts are sick of the PPI....IBS is coming back.
