    Default Newbie

Hello! I'm exploring the idea of gastric sleeve. I'm 45, 5'4" and 280 pounds. I suck at "dieting." I am an emotional eater and I eat out of boredom. I have read mixed reviews about the sleeve working for emotional eaters. Is there anyone else out in this forum that has experienced eating out of boredom and emotion and had success with this procedure?

I have scheduled a consult with a doctor in Atlanta, Georgia. They suggested I have my sleep study done prior to consult. I was diagnosed with OSA several years ago and non compliant wearing my CPAP machine. I eventually threw the thing out. I could not sleep with that equipment suffocating me all night long.

HELP! I'm at my wits end with being obese, too tired to exercise and just plain lazy!!! Any and all advice is welcome.

I am an emotional and boredom eater and am currently in counseling for it. I had my surgery on October 11, 2018. My highest weight was 315. Surgery weight was 255. I am now 160. I'm 5'4". I went from a 20 size jeans to an 8/10. Wouldn't change my decision for nothing. Binge eating disorder is a real thing and you must get help for it while you can. I know at Peachtree Bariatrics in Atlanta, they require you to go to counseling for so many months before and after... not sure if they do where you're going or not. I went to the seminar at Peachtree in 2008 and I think it's good for us to go get help.

Thanks for replying. I’m looking at Dr McGill at Piedmont Atlanta.
I’m glad to hear this has helped you even though you are an emotional and boredom eater as well.

    Hi, welcome here!
Emotional eating is the worst, isn't it?
There are lots of emo-eaters here.
We all have to find other ways to deal with that.
The sleeve definitely is a big help, but not the solution.
I am very, very happy with my sleeve.
But boredom, stress etc. will always be a part of your life...
English is not my first language, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

    Welcome Lolly!

The sleeve is a tool in our toolkit. Therapy helps to get down to causes and conditions. They work when I live them.

For me, this is a marathon not a sprint. A new lease on life and a lifestyle commitment. It involves a complete change in the way I think and the way I live today.

Best of luck as you embark on this amazing journey ;-)

    Welcome.

Big spoiler: The sleeve will help you lose weight initially, but it will NOT fix your emotional eating or boredom eating. That's something you need to address big-time through counseling and any other means you can find.

However, lots of people who have the same challenges you have have gone on to deal with the lifelong challenges and long-time habits that led us to obesity by learning how to behave, live and even think differently.

If you're really ready to take charge of your life, you can do it. But just know that being sleeved is only part of what you'll need to do to be successful.

    Best wishes to you!

You're welcome... I had my surgery in Anniston, Alabama and they don't require counseling but a lot of surgeons do. Even if they don't require it, its wise to go so that you can fix the problem that causes you to be an emotional eater. Good luck to you! You can do it!

What Ann2 says isi spot on -- I have an issue with "boredom" eating, and since I have limited physical abillities to go do things, I have to find hand and mind occupiers...or just say NO to myself and drink water, make a pot of tea, brush the dog, read, crochet, call a friend.....

I'm retired, and don't have quite the structured day I used to! However, at 20 months am maintaining my weight.

Agree with Ann. The Sleeve including other WLS will not fix your problems with eating. You must get help and address your eating problems. I had those issues and went to counseling for two years before the Sleeve and attended group therapy. I recommend you get help before surgery and continue after surgery to have the best chance for long term success. To many people are have WLS and have initial success then down the road go right back to their old habits and regain the weight. I find that so sad. I wish you well and much success.
