Default Oral surgery after being sleeved

I have finally made me a dentist appointment to get my teeth taken care of. After being on 1,000-3,000 mg of IV steroids every 5 months for the past 14.5 years, and the same amount of steroids monthly for the whole year of 2016, my teeth have finally paid the price. The first one broke a year and a half ago, the 2nd one when I had my hernia removed a year ago and another one this week. I've had 5 teeth surgically removed. I only have one back tooth left to chew my protein. The last dentist I seen wanted me to just get a partial but every steroid treatment I get, my teeth get weaker and weaker. I'm tired of my teeth breaking. I used to have perfect teeth. So to my point... if I get them all taken out and I have to eat soft foods for a few weeks, do you think that I'm going to gain what I've lost? There aren't many soft foods that aren't full of carbs. I love cream of mushroom soup but I worry about the carb count. Has anyone had to worry about this after being sleeved?

    Poor thing!!
Meds can have a really tragic effect for our teeth!! After several rounds of antibiotics a few years ago, I suddenly had three cavities, I didn't have any for like 30 years!! one tooth got suddenly infected, I had to have root canal and crown...did cost a real fortune..
Anyway, since that time (was 2011), when I'm taking anything chemical more than a few days, I use a few drops of tea tree oil on my toothpaste, it's a strong help to protect my mouth.

Back to your question, you could mix veggies and meat, make many kinds of soups or even eat Greek yogurt with apple sauce, tuna and mayo, split peas soup (my fav) or even moist scrambled eggs ...many things in soft food don't have much carbs, plus you are not at one year yet, and your restriction is really good, no reason for regain!! if you eat protein and veggies in soups you are sure you will be fine!

Don't worry about regain, but take care of your teeth/mouth, that's really important to avoid infections, you are already fragile..

I hope you will have a good capable dentist to take good care of you!
    take care!

How awful! My teeth are are not great either from years without dental insurance and side effects from years of antidepressant use (the older ones caused extreme dry mouth). I think you'll be okay on soft/pureed foods for awhile, as long as you make the right choices. Like Sandra said - pureed meat and veggies, eggs, soups, add protein powder to drinks and foods, etc. I hope you have a good dentist taking care of you!

My teeth went downhill after 4.5 months in hospital, vomiting every other minute and not being able to care for myself. I had 4 broken and crowned.

I reverted to the purée phase of VSG instructions and was able to get all the protein and veggies I needed without the carbs. Puréed pot roast, chicken or beef and veggie soup, nonfat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt “smoothies”...any protein/veggie combo meal can be puréed. My NutriNinja got (and still gets) quite a workout!

It’s so sad that the “cure” for certain illnesses is a problem waiting to happen elsewhere in our bodies. I wish you all the best ;-)

We shall see. I have state Medicaid now and it doesn't cover dental for over 21 years of age so I'm going to a facility that goes according to income. I get disability and have 6 children so I'm pretty sure my first visit will be the only visit that costs me but I hope it's a good dentist. I want to get all of them taken out and get dentures. I'm tired of tearing up my gums. I am all the time peeling off skin from my gums. Chewing even soft foods is hard. At 38 years of age, my teeth shouldn't be this bad off but like I said, 14.5 years of steroids does a number on your health. Your bones and your teeth.

I totally agree! I pureed some chicken with cream cheese and buffalo sauce during my pureed stage. It was good but it got old quick. How did you do it? Make it like a soup?

    Yes, exactly!
You can for example make a stew for the family with the slow cooker, then take meat and veggies for you, in the blender, add broth to make it more liquid and just drink it like a shake (after dental surgery you can use a large metal straw and go for full liquid at the beginning, it will avoid for pieces to get stuck in the wounds). When you get better and can have soft food, you just make a puree.
You only make one meal for the family, and you can eat with the right consistency for your mouth.

I did that after the sleeve, had a protein shake in the morning, then for full liquid I made my soups with meat or fish, veggies, then next soft food stage, same just with less liquid. You can get more protein that way. I had bad nausea for months and any easier way to get protein in was my way!

Your very welcome!! I had some personal experience with teeth removal (my wisdom teeth a three decades ago, my parents also got implants) and I actually had a class about "special diet for patients with dentures": sometimes they don't eat well/enough because the first weeks there is adaptation and for some blisters, so those patients can become really quickly vitamin deficient if they are not eating the right texture and if it's not nutritious enough. They do recommend to have some "ensure supplements" when people can't eat at the beginning, but for bariatric patients we already have our protein shakes so all good!

In my time the surgeon who took off my wisdom teeth had indeed no nutrition training and told me to eat ice cream for five days!! not kidding!! lucky at that time my metabolism was better and I didn't gain weight but it could have been really bad...

I would make pot roast (for example) normally, weigh out my protein and veggies and blend it into a purée. If I made soup or stew, I would strain out (with a slotted spoon) the protein and veggies and purée it. Anything you cook can be blended into a purée. Measuring is of course very important.

I had fun coming up with new and different ways to get what I needed and keep it interesting ;-)

Absolutely! I took some screenshots of some recipes last night for pureed soups that were low carb and high in protein. Its probably going to be a couple weeks before I have oral surgery but I want to be prepared for it. Nobody likes shopping or cooking when their entire mouth is hurting. Lol

Good for you! It’s always best to be prepared when I know what’s coming up.

We’ll be leaving soon for an extended motorcycle trip on the east coast. It takes some planning for me meal wise. Overdoing food is not the problem...it’s underdoing it. We’re much more active and I need to eat more food to stay healthy and not lose a ton of weight or get sick. Both have happened...I’ve learned as I go along to be prepared. And to have fun while I’m in the wind.
