Default I’ve never seen my weight fluctuate like it is right now.

I’m sure it’s stress. It can’t be anything but stress (eating). I have been losing a little a long but for the past week or so I’ll weigh and be super excited, only to weigh the next time and think (what the hell ?).. it’s not a lot either way but I’m so close to a milestone I want it’s consuming me. I’m 297-298 a day or two only to be 302-303 the next couple days .. I’m not sure why it’s up and down other than my water intake. I just struggle thinking my water has that big an impact. I do good on the weekends I’m down both Saturday and Sunday mainly I think because I play (pickle ball , yes it’s a real game .. lol.. goggle it ). I’m 52 in decent shape and I constantly get beat up on by older I mean late 70s to 80s year old folks who are Senior game athletes .. lol..

I start creeping up Tuesday thru Friday ??.. I want to be under 300 lbs consistently it’s becoming an obsession.. my family says it’s because I’m snacking ?.. I have to have a handful of popcorn or peanuts something salty at night .. I think it’s 100 percent mental , I’m not hungry I just have an unreal craving for SOMETHING around 9 pm. It’s like a tottie ... instead of a nightcap I have something salty.. last night was the last night !!... I’m going to see if that was the holdup.

I did drink a Michelob Ultra this past weekend so I’ve satisfied my desire for a beer .. it was okay but not what I had mentally built it up to be... so I’ve got that craving behind me. It’s like here lately I’m trying a bite of something just because ?.. I still have a major restriction I can’t understand those who say they don’t.. if I eat to fast my stomach let’s me know immediately I messed up. It’s almost a self correcting problem it’s no fun. But once again it’s when I’m in a hurry or stressed when it happens.. I’m eating on the run .. I eat something in my office at my computer but have learned it’s still a bite and wait a few minutes before bite #2 or I pay for it..

I’ve rambled enough !!... I read here daily , but when I get to wanting to release my thoughts or frustrations I seem to start a thread... LOL...I think part of it is my birthday which is coming up and the younguns I work with are calling me poppaw.. and the thoughts of a wedding in Florida on a July 5th that’s cost me $6000.00 so far and it’s for a rehearsal dinner and other functions. A new Job ??.. A 2 week class at a community college that was “HELL”... it seems the late 20s early 30 yo kids are working on me mentally at work and then I get blistered physically by those who should be in ASSISTED LIVING !!... them silver hair ladies and ole men that made Viagra popular have no respect for a guy looking for a friendly game of competition.

    Truss, you are hilarious!!!
You have a lot going on--a lot! Don't fret. The weight will come off. It has no other choice. My suggestion is that you find something else to snack on that is more healthy and has protein. I've given up my peanuts for a while. They are really high in calories, do you like Greek yogurt, pudding? take the time and investigate some new foods that you can add to your sleeve arsenal. Don't worry about those young people and the seniors, they are trying to keep up with you! Starting new threads is what keeps the site interesting!!!

I like it when you ramble and start new threads. You've kinda disappeared since you started back at work. Ramble on. Lol. I've been snacking too at night and it's not healthy snacks. I'll gain a pound and lose it 3 days later. I eat my emotions and as you know, I have a lot of them. I do excellent during the day but horrible at night. Or when I'm traveling. Like yesterday for instance, I had to drive to Birmingham for my neurologist appointment. On the way there, I had to swing by Walmart to get some stuff for the kids summer camp trip... the peanut butter M&M's were screaming at me during checkout and I answered. On the way home, I went to Aldi's to get some cheese for lunch. If I'm being honest, I am a binge eater when nobody is around. I recognize, I've sought counseling for it and I'm trying. Some nights, I will go to bed when everyone else does so that I'm not up alone with the cookies and the chips. It is a serious problem that I REALLY need to get ahold of. We can keep each other accountable. You just have to talk on here more. Lol

Ramble away Russ. A problem shared is a problem cut in half.

Sometimes I just have to remind myself to BREATHE instead of pant. Especially when circumstances prove to be overwhelming.

I sought outside help. Nowadays you can get therapy and not even leave your house!

I would try a low sodium, low calorie, high protein snack at night; like turkey, turkey roll ups, string cheese, or greek yogurt. You may just be retaining water. Also, are you exercising during the week as week as well, or just on the weekends? If just during the weekends, I would try to get a workout or two in during the week. Congratulations on you weight loss, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the much needed LAUGHS Russ!
You know I'm not laughing at you, but with you. I've missed seeing you post, but it sounds like you've got a lot going on. I feel your pain, especially over the silver haired pickle players heehee.

You are no pawpaw by far. Don't let the children pull your chain. It's still only a couple of months for you and I believe our bodies are still adjusting long after that. Everyone is different as well. Are you getting enough protein?? I know that's the running joke/cure for everything here, but I believe it's key for the metabolism. Eating on the run is the worst isn't it? I do into panic mode when I can't plan my 3 meals each day. Literally. I've learned to throw a few high protein items in my bag just in case I get off schedule.

I know this sounds rough, but I really try and avoid all snacking. Especially at night. That was my MAJOR NEMESIS in gaining 100 pounds. I could go all day and not even be hungry, but man come 8 - 9 pm I turned into a starving lunatic. I never want to get back to that place, it still scares me LOL.

I think you're under a lot of pressure right now and once your routine calms down some you will get right back on that weight loss horse and kill it! You are just that kind of person. Don't beat yourself up friend, remember you've lost 50+ pounds in 2 months. You got this!!

Russ, I love the way you write.
Snacking is definitely be our downfall if we succumb. Peanuts are the devils work - I can't ever just have a few!
I get the salty thing. We have a product in NZ called Marmite. It is a yeast extract that you spread on toast, bread, crackers etc. Some people can't stand it but I love it. When I am looking for something salty I get a tiny little bit of this on the end of a teaspoon - really just dip the very tip of the spoon into it and then pop it in my mouth. It is intense and satisfies the salty "want". Not for everyone but it works for me.

I hate to be the one raining on your parade, but...
What I read from you could be the beginning of a very slippery slope.
Cravings, not taking the time to eat.
That is not taking care of things right now and certainly not taking good care of yourself and your new sleeve.
This is your honeymoon period, this is the time where you have to learn new behaviors, new foods, a new lifestyle.

I would really urge you to go and find help with that, don't you have a bariatric team in your hospital?.
You have to change in order to get healthy and fit.
It is not enough to rely on your restriction, your restriction will get less in a couple of months.
The sleeve only works for you, if you start working the sleeve.

Sorry, but I felt I had to say this...
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Default Re: I’ve never seen my weight fluctuate like it is right now.

I was surprised after the sleeve that my weight loss was not a linear process like it was "before" when I was on a diet.
After the sleeve, I could lose and regain the same 5 pounds in a matter of days. Mainly because your body composition is changing, water retention, exercise etc..but after a few days it will stop and the pounds will be gone for good, until it does it's little dance again...stalls are normal and expected, so no worries.

You are only in your third month post-op, so it's normal to be stressed out when the scale is not moving the way you want. But you need to take a good look at what you lost so far, and I guessed it's the first time in your life you lost so much is such a short time? so give yourself a good path on the back and get focused on something else. Using the scale once a week could help because you wouldn't see the ups and downs, and looking at your measurements shrinking will do to.

The restriction is at it's best the first year, after that you can eat a little more each year, going from a few spoon the first months, to 1/3 plate at 3 years.
So keeping that in mind is really important to focus on nutrition and not the scale. A good nutrition will help in the long run. Some people who are not careful can lose the first 9 months, then start regain from that point.
So pack your food/snacks for when you are "on the run", planning will help for the really soon future time when you will be "out of the honey moon period".

For example, if you are not hungry, don't eat, but try to drink something warm, like herbal tea, it's comforting at night to have a good cup of herbal tea. Could be calming (herbs have virtues) and a good help before sleeping.
Since after the sleeve it's hard to know if you are hungry or thirsty. In doubt, drink first.

Also brush your teeth right after dinner so "the signal" is there to tell your brain : no more food!

If you really need to eat (and it's ok to be hungry!), eat at least three hours after your last meal, focus on protein. Eating pop corn at night is not a good idea since it's full of carbs and will trigger insulin. Same for peanuts. If you need something salty, go for almonds (1/4 cup max, less carbs than peanuts), cheese or some cold cuts of lean ham.
Because eating a little carb during a meal where you started with protein will not have the same impact on your metabolism compare to eat directly carbs.
You want to avoid insulin picks at all cost. Calories here is not the main issue since you can't eat much in quantity anyway.

Finally, you started your post with stress : stress by itself can be a reason to gain weight, even temporary stress can increase hormonal activity and those hormones linked to obesity (cortisol, ghrelin etc) will be impacted too.

Of course we all have stress in our lifes, but if you can protect yourself from some of the stress, go for it.

I know that since my hiatal hernia popped in November, and reflux is still really high with max dosage of PPI and low acid diet (waiting for my repair surgery), there is a few distant relatives I don't see because those people are always a huge source of stress (create drama and arguments with everyone), and it does impact directly my reflux!!
Since I can avoid that stress, I have no issue closing my door to drama and protect my health first!

So be patient and kind with yourself, and look at food as if it was medicine. Your sleeve is here to stay, just try to make the most of that precious first year. I'm sure you will reach your goal weight, how fast is not important, in the long run you want to lose and not regain.

    Take care!

CHILL. Maybe weigh yourself just once a week so you don't drive yourself crazy? I was the same way until I had my husband hide my scale. He could no longer stand my daily whining at my weight fluctuations that are totally normal. I got it back every Monday morning and recorded my weight in a journal (along with measurements about every few months). If you're eating what you should 95% of the time you should be fine.

I do find if we go out for pizza and I only eat one piece that always means 1 extra pound on the scale the next morning. Weird.

My 100 year old mother always did that "brush your teeth" thing after dinner. Said it was her cue not to eat anymore. Not that more food would have hurt her. She was one of those people who was full at one pancake. Huh?!?!

I do have a high school friend living in a senior assisted living facility (at 62!!), and I'm climbing mountains. Age has nothing to do with it, it's how you take care of your body. (Unless of course you get some disease or something). I intend to live life to the fullest until I am no longer able to. (Or better said, do crazy shit until I die.)

Think almonds are better but both have high fat content. The big issue on eating them at night is that the high salt content in them prevents you from shedding water over night and the morning after causing fluid retention and higher weight.

Truss, I think that's your issue. I'd agree on switching to something a bit healthier without salt. Popcorn is generally thought bad(also can irritate your stomach beyond the nutritional issues). About ten years ago a doc of mine said to just start calling beer liquid bread because that's what it is nutritionally. Only donuts are worse for us.
I am similar in size as your goal and was a similar weight at surgery. Over all you look to be making good progress!

I'm a daily weigher and can tell you from experience fluctuations of 3-5 pounds aren't uncommon for me. I typically go up and down a pound or two a day and then lose 4 pounds in a day. I had a stomach bug week before last and dropped 7 pounds in two days, and had it all back 3 days later. So yes water and bowel movements affect overall weight.

You also can be at a stall. It happens. You do everything right and for a week or two nothing happens. It seems to always happen around goal thresholds. For me it happened at 300 pounds and again at 250. I might be real or it might be we just mentally focus on it more when wanting the big number change.

Do what you are doing. Use the short term goal of breaking the threshold to drop the bad eating habits. You'll find that over time doing that gets you to the weight you want and healthy habits. Thank your family for calling out the choices you made. Many of us have family that is not supportive of the goal and put us in situations where we have to rely on willpower to stay on diet. Looks like yours aren't doing that.

    Oh ok. That makes sense.

Nuts are a totally healthy snack, just watch the amount. Look at the portion size on the container.
