It wont undo your pneumonia but know that you have inspired me to use my breathing thingy post surgery this week- you have helped someone else.
I am so sorry that you have had this complication!

Use it! Hooray! And if you run a fever and start coughing up green before you leave the hospital, insist on antibiotic BEFORE you go home. So much for my thinking "this is nothing and I'll get better once I'm home." :-)

Yes, that contraption has been around for decades. It's called an "Incentive Spirometer" and its purpose it to have you take very slow deep breaths post-op to fully expand all of the lung tissue. Helps to prevent pneumonia by clearing out stagnant mucous and residual anesthesia. Should be done 10x an hour for the first few days post-op or as directed by your surgeon.

I used the heck out of that thing. It made my whole chest, neck and back open up and feel so much better. My doc was a stickler about that.
