Bariatric surgery is on first intention made for people who have a BMI superior to 40, or 35 with comorbidities. Meaning most have a fatty liver.
Because of that most people will have a pre-op diet, and depending on their weight it can go from a few days to several weeks.
I was morbidly obese and my surgeon advised me to try to lose a little before the pre-op diet, which I did. I was supposed to have 3 weeks of pre-op diet, and had "only" two.
The first three days were not easy but it got better. I kept in mind that my liver was fatty and could brittle when lifted during the surgery. That idea made me really compliant.
Drinking a lot of water will also help with detoxing.

About nausea, anesthesia with on top surgery on the stomach will give nausea to a few unfortunate patients. Best thing to do is to address that issue during the anesthesia consult pre-op, they can inject you meds even before the surgery.

    Good luck and take care

I know nausea is common after the surgery, were they able to give you like a zofran or anti-nausea after the surgery to help?
Yes. I had phenergan. I had to refill it twice which my doctor said wasn't common but I do have TONS of other health problems as well that could have contributed to my nausea. It took me awhile to find a protein powder that my new stomach would tolerate. I'm sure that had a lot to do with it too.

How are you feeling??
I feel great! I am so happy that the surgery is over and am looking forward to a new (healthier) life! I live in South Florida, near West Palm Beach. Can't wait to be more active and enjoy bike riding, swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, etc. I am excited for you! It is normal to feel nervous about the surgery. I was scared to death but it really was no big deal at all. I also despise nausea and was more concerned about that than post op pain but the medications they use work really well. I wore a scopolamine patch behind my ear for 3 days and never felt any nausea. I was discharged with compazine for nausea but haven't needed it.

Every surgeon is different on the pre-op diet. I've heard of 2 weeks down to eating nothing the night before surgery. Just do what your doctor wants.

Not to burst your bubble, but family history of heart disease and high cholesterol may not go away. Mind did not. Every family member on my dad's side has it (or had it as most are dead). We tried the first three months after surgery without the cholesterol meds and my number skyrocketed again. Back on meds. But being healthy and active, along with seeing a doctor to monitor my heart history, I feel will contribute to a good, long life.

Congrats on your decision. All of us wished we would have had the surgery sooner!
