    Default Bariatric vitamins

My gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for June 6 in Mexico. What bariatric vitamins (brand names) are good?

My calcium citrate is from bariatric advantage (I order directly online, but I think you can order from Amazon). I take a Centrum multi-vitamin and B-12 (which I no longer take), both you can purchase from CVS.

    Just wondering.
Is it common in the US to take special bariatric vitamins?
Aren't those much more expensive than the normal, over the counter, multi vitamins?
I take just the regular, over the counter multi vitamins.
I started with two per day and my endocrinologist told me to take just one from now on.
Some companies do try to sell us those expensive "special bariatric" pills, but there are not many sleeve patients who take those.
Of course with a bypass things are very different.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

I take Walmart's generic version of Centrum vitamins for women. Not the vitamins for OLD ladies, even though my age qualifies me, but the vitamins for PRE-menopausal ladies, since last year's blood panel said I could use some extra iron.

This works great for me, based on my annual blood panel results.

FYI, I used to take B12 vitamins because a lot of sleeved patients have trouble producing enough B12, since an "instrinsic factor" necessary for that synthesis is produced by the stomach and when 80% of your stomach goes bye-bye, B12 insufficiencies can show up. But apparently my body doesn't have that problem, since my B12 blood panel a few years ago showed me as "high" (over normal limits) for B12.

Point is ... the vitamins YOUR body needs are the ones YOUR body needs, not what someone else's body might need. Keep getting those blood panel tests done annually!

I use the bariatric brand Celebrate. I've been able to take the multi vitamin, calcium and B12 with no stomach irritation. Yes, they are more expensive but I thought I would use them for at least the first 3 months while healing and then will probably switch to something generic. I was wondering about what type people here were using. Thanks for asking.

    Great Point Ann,
This is the same reason why I no longer take the B-12. When my doctor did my blood work he said that my B-12 levels were high and that I didn't need to take the pills anymore.

My Dr and Nutritionist guide me based on my blood levels.

When my “needs” change, I adjust accordingly.

Initially I took the Bariatric Advantage ones that my surgeon's office sold but they always made me feel queasy. I eventually switched to the gummy multi vitamins. They are the only ones that do not make me feel ill.

I was told bariatric vitamins for life, as they have extra of stuff over the counter ones don't. So I'm doing it.

Multivitamin? Pro Care Health (online) makes a great tiny one-a-day chewable for early on. Now I take a big capsule from the same company that comes in a bottle of 90, still one a day.

Calcium Citrate + D? Early on I loved the orange chewable Building Blocks (also online). Now I just get it at Walmart. It is impossible to find a chewable Calcium Citrate over-the-counter. I hunted forever.

Those are the only 2 I take.

My doctor told me that it's wasted money to buy the expensive vitamins. He said that the levels aren't much different. I compared a few and seen where some had a whole lot more of one type of vitamin but less of another kind. I take Walmart brand adult gummy multivitamins. I take extra D3, garlic and vitamin c. So far, my vitamin levels have been perfect. I've just had an issue with my iron. I'm on 325mg of iron supplements right now but if my body doesn't absorb the iron orally, I will have to take iron infusions. I'm 7 months post op now. Hope this helps.

My surgeon recommended an over the counter multivitamin and mineral supplement. It is a Clinicians brand. Not sure if it is available in the US. I have been taking it ever since my surgery and all my bloods have been spot on.
As Ann2 said, your body need what it needs. Be guided by your blood test results and your surgeon/Doctor .
