OMG, I would have loved to slug both the biter and the shoe thrower, but teachers can't do that anymore!! Even though the biter was mentally challenged, I think a quick hit may have had him think next time he bit. The 7th grade shoe thrower will probably be suspended for a day or two.

    Sraebaer,
Thank you for sharing such an honest and heartfelt post. I'm sorry that you're struggling, but thankful that you did catch it in time and are doing proactive things to help. You've always seemed like such a strong and logical person, I know that admitting the problem is half the battle and you definitely have the strength to overcome. You were successful when you struggled with gaining weight and went to Weight Watchers. You are a strong and brave woman. You can do this.

I used to drink quite a bit in my 30's and 40's and one day I did something similar....made a complete idiot out of myself on a girls vacation. I was so mortified oh it was awful. I decided then to stop. Cold turkey. People were shocked that I no longer drank them under the table, but I was just grateful to keep a clear head and to avoid the terrible hangovers that I used to get. I'd be in bed seriously for 3 days. No fun.

    Best of luck to you!

I am glad you are dealing with the addiction. I am thankful that so far I have not had any transfer addictions. (At least none that I have noticed.) I also have a friend who had bypass many years ago and she had a serious drinking problem. She is currently in rehab and will come out on the 28th. I know a lot of hers is also addiction transfer. She has struggled with alcoholism for years. Hopefully this time the rehab will stick. Please continue to be strong and control your urges. I think that if you were even having a nightly drink it wasn't an issue but you said the key word...you were "secretly" filling it up over and over. Big hugs Sharon!

I've continued to think about this subject of transfer addiction with alcohol.

It seems that, as with the other big question we're all dealing with here whether we're losing or maintaining -- HOW MUCH AM I EATING? -- the question of HOW MUCH AM I DRINKING? is also worthwhile to explore.

I found this study reported in Addiction magazine that others might also find interesting. Short version is that the more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to underestimate and to under-report (to others and to yourself) how much you're drinking.

Because I've been planning and tracking my daily menus and calories on My Fitness Pal for five years, I have a database of my own drinking habits. I just tallied up my May 1-30, 2019, alcohol intake and discovered I'm drinking on average not 1 but 1.4 drinks a day. That means I'm averaging 10 drinks/week.

Hmm. That surprised me a bit. I thought I was doing 7 drinks/week.

So even though I'm in the "low risk" group (as defined by the study linked to above), I'm going to move my weekly alcohol drinks back down to 7, which is what I'm most comfortable with.

Oh ... and for the record, 3 fewer drinks/week amounts to 5.3 pounds not regained in a year.

That is an interesting read. It applies to me more about food as I am a tea total and always have been. This just proves that on days I don't write down what I eat I am eating more than I think I am. Starting to keep a food diary again. Thanks for the advice.

The first week I stopped drinking I lost 2 pounds. The other cool thing that's happening is my digestive system is working so much better. (TMI to share there, but it's obvious alcohol plays a part in the way our bodies digest food). Plus I can stay up late like a regular person.

Just feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment as I've gone from having to be careful about what I eat, to having to be careful about what I eat AND not drink. And the third thing I have to work on is my caffeine addiction. By August. I can do this!! (But talk about an addictive personality. Last night at Walmart I was looking at the candy section. What's up with that? I haven't cared about candy for years). I stared at the 99 cent box of Now and Laters for a minute before my mind reminded me that I weighed 219 when I used to eat that.

In Tanzania diet soda does not exist. I guess when everyone is hungry, they don't have to worry about sugar. It sounds like one of the poorest countries in Africa.

Aaahhh, transfer addictions! They're not just about alcohol.

And here's another useful article about what transfer addictions are really all about and how to address them.

Addiction is an onion that has to be peeled. And it doesn't happen overnight.

Oh, Ann2 - I read this wrong and that an "onion addiction" was something. Well, I guess it could be.

I find i have an addiction to NOT being bored. I get fidgety, and used to fill it with food when I felt adrift. Back to journaling big time. And with weird health stuff going on, I am feeling a bit topsy turvy.

I am so grateful to each of you, sraebaer, Ann2 -- for your friendship, sound advice and "no crap" attitude. Self deception is so easy when your addictions start to take control of you. CANDY? I avoid that aisle, and on the weakest days, my sweet husband (no pun intended) does the shopping because they sabotage good intentions at the checkout.

Lots of medical tests coming up, but weight seems pretty steady at the moment. Coming up to the 2 year mark in October.

Hugs to everyone on the board!
