    Default Daily Meds after Surgery

So I am currently on 5 different medicines and am scared about how I will take them after surgery. One is an antidepressant and another is for anxiety which I have to take daily instead of as needed. I honestly would be a mess with out these two meds. Did any of you have meds you took before the surgery and was you still able to take them after? I hate to ask a lot of questions, I’m just very nervous about some things

It sort of depends on their size. If they are tiny I bet you could swallow them in a sip. It they are big, ask your doctor if you can crush them. I know some time-released meds can't be crushed. Or maybe what you take is also available in liquid form. Just talk to your surgical team. I know my psychiatrist always tells people NOT to go off their meds for things like anxiety or depression before or after sleeve surgery, so that's not an option.

Don't worry, it's only a very short period of time that swallowing a pill would be an issue. I would say no more than a month.

What sraebaer said ^^^^ Another good resource for questions is your pharmacist. They will know which pills can be crushed, which ones may be available in a liquid, etc. I am facing the same issue with my Cymbalta. It comes in a rather large capsule and cannot be opened and mixed with foods or liquids. Hoping I can just swallow that one whole after surgery.

According to my doctor, you should not take time released medications after the sleeve. Make sure to ask about this if any of your medications are time released.

I still take the same anti depressant and anti anxiety meds I took before, and they were not discontinued, other than the day of surgery. Mine is extended release, but not a capsule.

I did go off 14 other meds for health issues.

I went through withdrawal and it isn't pretty I also took antidepressant and antianxiety medications. Didn't have any problems with sleeve surgery, but with bypass I would definitely recommend getting liquid or dissolvable. I never went back.

I’m having the sleeve. Was your antidepressant a capsule?

Yeah this has been my biggest worry as I get closer. My antidepressant is a capsule the others are tablets. So I worry about the capsule the most.

I would just ask the prescriber to order liquid or dissolvable for you.

I take a bunch of meds that couldn’t be discontinued after surgery. I just take them one at a time and wait for a couple of min in between. As long as you’re not gulping water to take them, you should be fine.

The best bet is to always consult your surgeon and doctor that prescribed the meds. It is best to have both doctors involved.

Just wanted to update on this - all of my meds were continued after surgery without any changes. The evening of surgery, approximately 5 hours post-op, I took my pills (2 large capsules of cymbalta and 2 regular-sized tablets) with sips of water, spaced out one at a time, and was surprised to not have any issues. That is how I've continued to take my pills since the surgery and have not had any problems.
