Default worried about getting liquids in!

HI! I am having surgery on June 3, 2019 and I am sooooo excited!! However, everyone I have talked with personally tells me they had an extremely hard time getting their liquids in during the two weeks after surgery. Any advice from anyone on this?

Hi and welcome! I’m just 6 weeks out and I’m still trying to get 64 oz in daily. But what really helped the first two weeks was having a bottle of water with me at all times and just sip, sip, sip. If you don’t like water, you could add Crystal Light or Mio, any sugar free water additive will work. Also, hot (decaf) tea and broths are another option. You will do well, a lot of us had nerves before the surgery (at least I did). But this is the best decision I have made.

Literally sip fluids constantly. I always had a drink in my reach. I would sip set it down. A few minutes later sip and set it down. super annoying. But without being able to drink that much it’s the only way. An I still never hit my target for the day. I was close but it’s hard. You have to put a lot of effort to just be mindful all day.

I never had a hard time, I just did it. You have to. Take teeny, tiny sips every waking moment. Don't start out thinking you can't follow the rules!!! All liquids counted: the protein drinks, a cup of coffee or tea, water, whatever. You can do it! (Or you can end up back in the hospital with dehydration).

Sip frequently. Remember that all liquids count towards your fluid goals. I would suggest setting a timer to go off every 10-15 mins in the beginning to remind you to sip. You won't really feel thirsty or hungry initially. It took a few months before I was meeting both protein and liquid goals regularly. The most important thing is that you don't get dehydrated. So as long as you are getting in enough to not get dehydrated you will be fine. Just keep making a concentrated effort. You will be fine.

It's just something that you have to do. As others have said have a water bottle and just sip every waking moment.
There is no getting around doing this. It really is no hardship and quickly becomes a habit.
I have a water bottle permanently at my side and am constantly sipping (I am 20 months out).
Do worry about this it will be just fine.

not to rock the boat but I thought that coffee/tea don't count because they are diuretic in nature. I was told that if I drank 8 oz of tea (even decaf) I would need to drink 16 oz of water. thankfully i'm not a big coffee/tea drinker

It's the caffeine in coffee and teas that is considered a diuretic. Although, some sources say that even decaf coffee and teas can still have a small amount of caffeine.

I was told by nut that decaf tea was ok, and counted as intake for the day. Many hot teas I found were decaf and I found decaf sun tea also. Good news for someone who drinks tea constantly!

So is decaf tea okay? Cause I am a tea lady (hot, cold, definitely iced)!

My surgeon gave me the go ahead on all decaf teas. Not sure about coffee, I didn’t ask (not much of a coffee drinker). I think she was worried I wasn’t getting enough liquids in. Ask your surgeon for his/her recommendation.
