Default Vets -- What NEW lessons have you learned lately about maintenance?

I was sleeved almost five years ago, so I'm focused now on maintenance.

Which makes me curious -- what NEW lessons have others who were sleeved some time ago ago learned recently about the maintenance lifestyle that works well for you? Have you shifted things up? Why?

I'll start the ball rolling ....

First, looking back on 3.5 years of maintenance it's very clear that the biggest contributor to my maintenance program has been NOT about food or exercise but SLEEP!

If I sleep 7-8 hours a night, the next day goes swimmingly.

I can tolerate 6 or even 5 hours of sleep. But if this goes on for, say, 3 days in a row ... it gets much harder to stick true to my daily lifestyle plans.

It's similar to the HALT danger signs for alcoholics: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. And frankly, the first three don't bother me nearly as much as Tired.

    (Continued from above)

Therefore, "sleep hygiene" (yes, that's a thing) has become of great interest to me. I sleep better and longer if I ...

    1. Wear socks to bed. Don't laugh.

    2. Don't take a nap during the day.

    3. Get my 10K steps/daily.

    4. Don't eat spicy food at night or just before bedtime.

    5. Take off my earrings (the fasteners stick my neck if I don't).

    6. Don't watch anything very exciting on Netflix at bedtime.

    7. Don't drink coffee after 3 pm.

    8. Occasionally take one Tylenol PM at bedtime (melatonin does nothing for me).

What are socks ??.... Here In the South we go barefoot almost year round (just kidding)

BUT ILL ADMIT ... I did giggled when I read “socks to bed”.. but I agree with the rest of the stuff..

EXCEPT .. Ear rings ?.. if I wore ear rings I’d probably need socks. Because my wife wouldn’t give me time to get my shoes on before she kicked me out.

So minus “socks” and “ear rings”.. I’m with ya EXCEPT I’m a “NEWBIE” 6 weeks post op.. maybe if I get to years out in Maintence I’ll consider the “socks “ !... LOL

    I have a different one:
I have to stay vigilant, on top of things, don't take my sleeve for granted.
I am still working my sleeve.
It is easy to let your guard down.
It is so easy to think that "you know it all".
But the scales (yes, I still weigh daily) tells a different story.
And I think, the further we are out, the more difficult it is to go back to the basics.
Much easier not to regain, just keep eating like a sleeved person should.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

    LOL, Truss.

    And amen, Dutchie!

Here's something I'm struggling with lately ... 8 glasses of water a day. Lately, I'm only getting down half that.

What tricks and tips do y'all have going on that front? FYI, I do find it easier to get down warm or even hot water than cold water.

I'm by no means a vet but water intake is a struggle too. I get about 1.5 litres on a good day (6 glasses) I also have 1-2 cups of tea ( I know they don't count) which I really enjoy so don't want to give them up.
I add some water drops sometimes to make the water a bit more interesting.
Does green tea count towards water intake - she asks hopefully? I could do a couple of cups of that :-)

Funny you guys are bringing up water intake because I have noticed that I can actually drink down water relatively quickly compared to other fluids. As a matter of fact, I was thirsty the other day and I felt like I chugged down quite a bit rather quickly. Now bear in mind it is probably nowhere near what I was able to chug down pre sleeve as I was a very fast drinker and always drank a lot. People were always concerned I was diabetic bc I drank so much water but I never had any blood sugar issues which is surprising as I have diabetes on both sides of the family to include my late mother.

As for what I have learned, as long as I weigh daily I can keep my head in the game and adjust my eating accordingly. That has been all I really have needed so far. I am only 2 1/2 years out and have been in maintenance for about a year and 8 months. I am also an avid exerciser. I do structured exercise 6 days a week.

I know that exercise is THE KEY as far as maintenance for me. When I exercise consistently, my weight is fine and I can have the few (very few), indulgences. When I stop working out, my weight comes back--especially when I don't stop the indulgences. While I am at the gym at feeling the pain (good) from being at the gym, I always say to myself "you love this, remember this feeling!" My new maintenance habit is going to be to weigh myself more frequently. I think seeing the numbers on a scale on a regular basis will keep me in line. I also think keep track of my food is also something that is a new maintenance tool for me (since rejoining WW). I also think that I will keep attending the WW meetings regularly even after I get back to goal.
PS. I'm not drinking nearly enough water as I should be!
PSS I can't sleep with cold feet and have to put on socks!

New lesson? I feel each year gets more difficult. The first two or three years I didn't have to do much of anything, just eat healthy most of the time and exercise. Weighed exactly the same for years. Now I feel like I have to watch every bite I take, and when I gain say 3 to 5 pounds over a vacation of not being totally careful, it can take me 6 weeks to get it off. But I will NEVER regain my weight. Now that we are retired every trip involves activity. No lying on the beach for us.

I never tracked, and now I do with the WW app. (You can say I told you so Ann). I continue to eat how I should and exercise a lot. Just finished a 5 mile hike which included 600 feet of elevation and about a mile of traversing across a stream balancing on rocks. Pretty good for 62 I think!

I can add another one: awareness and really knowing yourself.
That has turned out to be a biggy for me.
Know your kryptonite (as Ann2 calls it) and know what makes you tick, or in this case: eat.
Then you have the choice: to eat or not to eat.

I know my choice now, I don't eat it.
Salted peanuts, chips, sugar, cookies etc., no thanks.
Those things play tricks with my brain.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

3 years 1/2...The last 6/7 months have been the worth.
Indeed, I got sick, and did regain with prednisone, but I have to remind myself everyday that it will go away because this is such a step back and hard to deal with...joint pain is back and worth than ever ...

Nutrition : trying hard to eat lower carbs, I was already moderate low carbs before, but trying to fight the meds side effects every way I can.
I did cut all snacks to lower my insulin picks. No diabetic, just trying to cut hanger and help with health issues. My hiatal hernia and reflux do sabotage my efforts for sure..but fighting it too.

Water : my intake is also an issue( like many) if I'm not really careful. I make myself two large warm herbal teas per day (one mid morning, one mid afternoon) and since it's one liter total, it does help with hydration and to cut hunger. Drinking just water is still hard and make me nauseous if I drink too fast, it has to be cold. Drinking green tea everyday too, it's also great against water retention.

Sleep : it's been complicated for month with my health issues, it is for sure not helping, I can't sleep properly. Before last Summer, I slept well and could see it was great for my stamina.

Therapy : started it in February when health was critical. Not sure it is helping at all. But worth trying. I will quit soon, not worth the money

Stay positive : no matter what, and since I was a kid, I always try to have positive images or a way to see a better future. I does help on some very deep levels! (which is why I feel therapy is doing nothing for me, in 3 months it's going nowhere and I might not have found the right therapist. A few friends always say they learn so much about themselves....me...nope...the therapist was actually asking me advice last week, that's when I decided that was the last session).

This fourth year is not easy...but I'm sure it will get better!

Have you ever heard of Dr Matthew Weiner? He is a bariatric surgeon who has dozens of YouTube videos, a big practice and a book or two. He addresses lifelong success in his videos (among other things). I've only watched a few videos but he seems to be very knowledgeable. I posted a link below.

Pre-sleevers - avoid YouTube if you are having doubts b/c there are a lot of negativity there. Especially the "Things I Wish I Knew Before Surgery" videos. Some people go into the process with limited preparation/information and unrealistic expectations.
