    Default 3 years later

It's been 3 years since my daughter Meg suffered a catastrophic brain injury from complications after WLS. Her condition is called Wernicke's Encephalopathy, and it is permanent. It was caused by vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency due to excessive vomiting. There are more and more cases of this being seen every day. Please, if you are having complications, don't let a doctor blow you off as the did us. Thiamine is so very important.

Here's what she looks like today.

OMG that is so sad! It just goes to show you that doctors need to listen to their patient’s complaints more closely.

    Wow, that is an improvement!
    How does she feel Katrina?
And thanks again for the reminder!

Each time you post a photo she looks better. Hope and pray that continues! What is the prognosis for her future?

She does look good, doesn't she? Well, other than the raggedy clothes and hair It's hit or miss with her. Some days she does well like yesterday, other days she falls repeatedly. Depression is still her biggest hurdle. It breaks my heart to see my baby with no desire for life. She's 23. She should be living her best life instead of hiding herself away in her bedroom. Who knows what her prognosis is. The doctors sure don't tell us anything. The only information we get is from sharing with others in the Wernicke's group on Facebook. From what I can tell, it never gets better and can get worse. She's lucky in that it only took away her walking and vision. Most people suffer from severe memory loss and confabulations on top of the gait and eye issues. Her memory and cognitive abilities are fully intact. I know she could be at least a little better than she is if she would only will herself to get up and fight for it. She has no muscles anymore after 3 years spent constantly in bed. Depression is a bitch!

She has tried a variety of antidepressants. None of them really worked for her, and she quit taking them. The only thing she "remembers" to take is her klonopin which is in my possession now and given once a day. That was a problem that got ugly when I took it away. "I'm an adult!" Too bad, kid! I'll be damned if she's going to overdose on my watch!

So sorry you're going through this. I know antidepressants are totally trial and error, but if one worked for her that would be wonderful.
