Default 5 years out..nausea and bloating

    Hi everyone
I’m 5 years out and last week every time I had a cup off coffee in the morning, I’ve started to burp, with the most foul taste in my mouth!
And I bloat up as soon as I’ve drank 1/4 cup!
I’ve never had this problem before and the coffee is weak and I sip it
I also have no energy...I have vitamin B12 jabs but it’s had no effect this time.
Has any one else had this so far on after there sleeve?

    Jane

Cut out coffee? Talk to your doctor?

I'm 5 years out with no side effects so far, thank God. Other than I have to be more careful with what I eat as the years go by!

I'm only 19 months out, so....and decaf coffee is one of the things I tolerate pretty well. If you're having unusually "dark" weather, sometimes you need some sunlight to get your vitamins and energy to kick in!

Today was our first totally summer day, about 80 degrees. It really does boost your mood to see the sun and everything FINALLY turning green. Had my first nice woods hike after being sick for over a week. I think just the sun made me feel better.

(I think snow is in the forecast for later this week).

I started to have bad reflux more than two years after my sleeve, since strong asthma attacks gave me a hiatal hernia. Took a while to understand where the issue was...

But reflux could be just temporary for you. It could happen if you had food the day before that your stomach didn't like (fried food or acidic food?). Or it could ba as simple as stomach flu or any kind of bug of that kind..try to eat a low acid diet and take some tums to help.

My surgeon did tell early on, that after a sleeve, it's always a good idea to have an endoscopy may be after 2 years surgery. I was 3 years out when I had all my exams. Sometimes reflux could be silent. When I had all my exams done, I was surprised looking at the PHmetry results that when my reflux was at it's pick, I didn't even feel anything...but yet it was damaging my lungs...

If you are tired, the best way is to have a blood test and watch for your levels (iron, D, B etc...). Do you still take vitamins? after winter, D deficiencies are really common. Also, if I have a stressful time, I always increase my magnesium intake, or I feel really tired suddenly.

    Take care

Thank you here in the uk not as far as I no we don’t have a endoscopy at all!
The weather is horrible here today again!....but not had this before even if the weather been bad.
I’m on tablets for reflux since I’ve had my sleeve,so really don’t understand why it’s happened all off a sudden!
Perhaps I’ll give the nurse a ring,as after 5 yrs you don’t go and see them anymore,I’ll see what she says,
Then I’ll go and see my gp,I have vitamin b12 shots every 3 months and take multi vitamins

Glad you had a nice hike

Well, if you've been taking a PPI for 5 year it means that you do have a reflux. Sometimes PPI stop working and it could get worth. You might need a higher dosage or just an other kind.

A reflux in the morning, (reflux is worth at night when lying down) after drinking coffee (acid) is not uncommon.

I had surgery in Asia (was working there at the time) in a teaching hospital where my surgeon was a teacher to many other bariatric surgeon in other countries around. They have the same protocol that we have in France in the equivalent of a "center of Excellence" in the US. I never lived in the UK so I don't know much about the NHS.
But in the US, France or where I had surgery,Taiwan, they have almost the same pre-op exams. And it does include an endoscopy. In France we also have one post-op per year for life with a complete blood test. In Taiwan they would do an endoscopy at 2 years, in France they only do it if the patient has issues.

During my last post-op with my surgeon in Taiwan, I was 18 months out, did stop my PPI a few months before, and I did have a very light reflux. Doc told me to have an endoscopy at my two years since I would be back in France, just to make sure everything was alright.
I didn't because I was fine, but I was eating a low acid diet (no coffee, fruits etc) and I was thinking about doing the exam before my next departure overseas.

Also, just thinking about it, my reflux did get worth when I was like 25 months out when I had a very bad lungs infection, had antibiotics and that did mess up my GI track, I had to take prebiotic for one month to be back to normal...after that it was fine until a few months ago. May be you had antibiotics recently?

So it might be nothing. But better safe than sorry!

Regarding the vitamins, I had deficiencies before the sleeve, it got worth after. A recent study does show that after any surgery on our stomach, deficiencies get worth. I was always told that non absorption is only for bypass patient....that's wrong!

So you may want to get a blood test and make sure they include D and magnesium. My iron and D have been worth since the sleeve, and I do take vitamins. I take mega dosage of a high potency multi, plus extra iron and D and that doesn't even put me at the minimum...my recent surgery might have solved the iron/anemia issue, I will know that with my next blood test next week!

    Take care!

My doctor is always my best source. I have a hiatal hernia. I get an endoscope yearly.

Whenever I get that burpy bloated feeling it’s usually due to something I ate previously I still take omeprazole daily and find it works best in the AM before coffee. I use the dissolving one. It works best for me.

I’ve also found that alternating between barimelt and topical patch vitamins and minerals keeps all my levels where they need to be.

I send All Good Thoughts for a quick resolution :-)
