    Default Mentally struggling with journey

Hi, my name is Candace. I’ve never done a forum before but thought I’d check this out. It’s been almost 10 months since my surgery. I’ve only lost 108lbs. I feel this process is a HUGE mental challenge more so than anything else.

I realize this sounds crazy, but I started off at 401lbs and was told I’d easy lose 100lbs in the first 90 days. That’s my struggle. I feel like I’m failing. The mental side of this is very hard. The struggle of what to put in my mouth and when. I have been big since I was 11 years old. Bad habits over 30 years of doing are very hard to change.

    Welcome Candace!

Depending on how long you've been obese, if you have diabetes or other health issues, weight loss is not the same for everyone.

It took me two years to reach my surgeon's prediction ( 110 pounds!!) so in my books you are doing great!! You lost the same weight in less than one year!!

But after two years you can eat more, and that's when things get sometimes complicated and most sleevers will see a regain.

What is difficult for you today? eating too little? not eating enough carbs??
Because there is probably solutions to help!

    HI Candace
Well done on your achievement so far. This journey is different for everyone and we all lose weight differently. Take pleasure in the loss and just keep going. It is definitely a mental challenge and the sleeve is just a tool to help you along. If you are having some difficulty, go and see your dietitian and [perhaps a behavioral therapist to help you conquer your food demons. I still have food demons and i also find it a challenge, especially trying to get rid of the last few kg. I am scared about the future as I think maintaining and keeping the weight off will be a big challenge for me. Good luck with the rest of the journey and we are all here to keep you going and give you support.

I agree with both Sandra and ellie... what you've accomplished so far is amazing! That is a lot! That is a big deal! You should be proud of yourself... How much do you eat in a day? Do you still follow the golden rule of protein first, then good carbs? I see a counselor because I want to conquer my food addiction while my tool still works. Good luck to you!

ONLY 108 pounds in 10 months. Do you realize how crazy that statement sounds? Have you ever lost 108 pounds in 10 months? Time to get that positive glass half full attitude going friend! I made it to goal by keeping positive every step of the way. I have never had so much fun in my life as watching the pounds drop off, feeling better, looking better, just everything kept getting better!

Perhaps you could use help from a medical professional to discuss you feelings. You should be over-the-moon thrilled at how well you are doing. They could help with the mentally struggling part. Best of luck to you!

You could meet me for a hike in Sedona AZ in June with Wildland Trekking. 4 days of long hikes with elevation! Oh the hiking I'd do if I lived where you do!!

    Hi Candace
108 pounds in 10 months is fabulous.
You are right though the physical part of the process (surgery) is only a small part, the mental part is the biggie. It can take some time to get your head around your decision and how different your life will be - for the better! :-)
Sometimes getting some professional help can be beneficial.
As Sraebaer said being positive is part of the key to success long term.
You are doing great. Keep focused on the end goal...a healthier happier smaller you! :-)

Hi! Thank you for reaching out. Eating/drinking the wrong things. I know what to eat/drink but to do it is a different story. It’s hard to change 30 years of bad habits overnight. I don’t know how to change my mental being.

I get that 108lbs is awesome. But I’m not doing my part well and should be down a lot more due to my starting weight. I’m not complaining, just pointing out facts.

My best advice for you is find someone to help you with that struggle.
Find a good psychologist, one that is trained for people with eating disorders or problems.
Maybe the hospital can provide you one.
    Good luck!

The fact is, you've lost a lot of weight in a short time; ever did that before? Also, this is a journey and behaviors are difficult to change but they have to be to be successful long-term. I'm going to be 8 years post-op in July and this is the first time in my life that I've kept off weight. Using your "tool" as a way to figure some things out regarding behaviors around food is of the utmost importance, being mindful, kind to yourself and staying motivated is key to success. Fitness added to the lifestyle is also so darn important and fun now!

Enjoy the changes, embrace the lifestyle, talk to yourself in a positive manner, and most of all be happy with your success and don't fret too much about "failing". You're a warrior to have had the surgery now work it to the fullest and continued success on this amazing journey!

Welcome Candace. First of all, do not be hard on yourself. You lost 108 lbs in 10 months. That is wonderful!! Stressing out about what you think you should have lost by now is only going to slow things down. Just keep following the rules and trust the process. Your eating should be focused on proteins and then veggies. Getting in lots of fluids. Try to exercise if you are not already doing so. You can start small by walking. Make lots of small healthy changes. Park a little farther. Take the steps. Get up and walk around every hour for at least a few minutes. Squat while brushing your teeth. One thing I will say is that as you get further along you will need to up your calories a little bit. Hang in there. It is going to take time but you will lose the weight. Trust the process.
