Angry I have made myself sick!

I am 26 days post-op and have managed to make myself sick! I was doing so well and then my son gave me a bag of peanut butter M&M's. I have stuck to my surgeons instructions to the t until the last 3 days. I justified it by saying "I got in all my protein for the day so what's a few M&M's? I am going to seek counseling tomorrow because this is seriously a sickness! It's not like I was hungry or even bored. I just wanted it because it was there. I've told my kids not to bring any sweets or chips in the house anymore. I've got to give this my all and I can't do that if it's available to me. I'm disappointed in myself.

Great job at holding yourself accountable and taking swift action! Especially on the counseling. Now forgive and be kind to yourself and move forward in your new healthy lifestyle!

Don't beat yourself up. We all falter. But you do know what your mistake was so learn from it. You cannot go off the rails though. I think it is smart to get counseling. The early stages are generally the easiest to avoid the junk. Wishing you the best of luck.

I agree with Christie. The first year we can eat nothing, and since my first year was not easy because I was nauseous for so long, it did help not to get sweets around, because I could be nauseous eating fish, but not with sweets.

Temptation is not that hard if the chocolate is still at the store. You did great warning your kids.I banished soda 7 years ago, ice cream is just one day per week, no candies inside the house etc...

Don't worry, it's just a one time thing, the sleeve is a process, and you are learning, like all of us! One bag of M&M's is just one rock in your shoes. Shake it off, you will be fine! Do not worry, keep up the good work, eat enough protein, drink enough water and take your vitamins. You will do great!

    Take care!

I wouldn't beat myself up over a few M&Ms. This is your new life, not a diet. If you have a treat now and then it's no big deal. I've kept all my weight off for over 4 years and have had plenty of "treats." Not all the time of course, but once in a while won't hurt in my opinion.

I could never stick to diets before so I don't intend to start trying now.

I do have it easier than those of you with families. Our kids are all grown so we have no junk in our house. Nothing to tempt me!

Carbs generally are easier to eat but are not our friends. I love cookies so we just don't have them in the house now. Every now and then I will have one if I am out somewhere and they are on offer - and I really enjoy them - but don't miss having them every day.
Have you tried different types of protein? I love cottage cheese and have this for lunch every day - with some salad bits and a lite cracker or two now. Eggs are always great.
Red meat is still difficult. I can eat it but in much smaller quantities than chicken or fish - which I also eat a lot of. Early on it's a case of trying small quantities of different foods. If something doesn't agree with you give it a rest and try it again at a later date. I love fresh salmon - baked in the oven - but I have tried it 3 times since surgery and just don't tolerate it anymore sadly. Canned salmon is fine though - go figure!
It's still early days for you so it might just be a case of trial and error with the protein. I still have a protein shake for breakfast most days as it is an easy way to get a good blast of protein to set me up for the day.

I was drinking protein shakes for the first week home but can't drink them anymore. They make me sick. I made ricotta bake but it doesn't settle well. Cottage cheese either. I can tolerate imitation crab meat with cream cheese. I pureed 1 chicken breast with 2 ounces of cream cheese & 1 tablespoon of buffalo sauce. I can tolerate that okay.

I think it's just going to have to be a case of try lots of different things to see what works for you. Have you tried different brands of protein shakes. Some are definitely better than others.

I've tried 3 different brands. I did okay with 2 of them pre-surgery and the week after but then, suddenly, I couldn't tolerate them anymore. I want to buy unflavored protein powder so I can add it to my meals but I've had trouble affording it lately. I'm going to work on that over the next month.

Since I had an history of vomiting with any kind of anesthesia, being pregnant etc...my surgeon did warn me that nausea and vomiting would probably affect me after the sleeve. Then here it was post-op! since the vomiting was not stopping for three days (they kept me on IV so I was not having dehydration), the doc said to have juice, because the GI track would absorb the sugar easily. He was right.

I had the same issue with protein shakes, changed many times, preferred a unflavored vegan and added things (PB2, dark coco etc). The first year there is food I couldn't stand, even just the smell would make me sick. Now it's better. My fav cauliflower is back!!

I was eating lots of soft fish, Greek yogurt, tuna with mayo. When I could make it, moist meat loaf...Tiny bites only..

I also took homeopatic nausea medication to help (MediNatura, BHI, Nausea) still have one bottle in my purse! but after one year it was manageable, I also discovered that nausea was worth with the PPI I was taking the first year. But my reflux was impossible to manage without, so I decreased the dosage little by little until I was able to stop it for good! Same week, nausea was gone for good too!

Hang in there! it will get better!

First, well done in confessing the m&ms. I found I've added a bit of sugar back and its caused my already messed up immune system to go beserk. So feeling bad. Inflammation is painful.
I think for most people the occasional sweet bite of something isn't a bad thing, but for me with an already badly compromised immune system, I think I've learned a painful lesson (literally painful). Certainly not worth the pain for the few bites that were not even as tasty as I remembered.

I hope you feel bettter! But learning is a life long process!
