    Default Apples

For the last week I've been trying to eat healthier and snack on fruits and veggies. Last week I had red delicious apples, and they were great. This week I bought honeycrisp apples and I immediately made applesauce (throw up) with them. I thought maybe my tummy was just unsettled when I ate half of one yesterday and made applesauce, but nope, it just happened again today. That's a bummer; those are so yummy. I also bought Granny Smith, so I'll give one of those a try tomorrow. I can't believe this is my first time trying apples since I had VSG 4.5 years ago.

I have only had one apple (part of) since surgery and it wasn't a great experience. I thought it might be because I didn't peel it. I haven't been game enough to try again.
Interesting that different varieties might react differently. I might try a different sort. :-)
I can eat most other fruit ok - Pears, plums, peaches, watermelon, oranges.

I eat apples occasionally with no issues. Obviously I can't eat an entire full sized apples. I always go for the tiny ones. I always buy the gala because they are my favorite.

Since you have a really high and uncontrolled reflux, take NSAID's and vomit a lot, you need to look at some apples as triggers. Not all, but a few (especially granny smith) are very sour and you should not eat those with reflux.

Some apples are ok, and since they have pectin (fiber) they actually can help your reflux.

Also if apples are not organic, they need to be peeled since apples are often on the top of the list for fruits contaminated by pesticides. And those chemicals do increase reflux too.

When I had to take antibiotics a few months ago and my reflux was at it's pick (I knew at that point I had a hiatal hernia), I couldn't eat any kind of acidic food period.
Even with the highest dosage (80mg) of Nexium. And other disgusting gaviscon gel that i was supposed to take after each meal to contain the acid did make me sicker and did nothing.

All patients with reflux who vomit often show indication of gastritis. The best way to avoid symptoms is to avoid all acidic food (the worth for me is coffee or chocolate, big nono).

My reflux is "contained" at that point, took two months to settle but I still can't eat any acidic fruit: lemon, oranges, tomatoes, peaches, apricot, pineapple etc are out of the menu.

My stomach has been really picky and I can't eat many fruits, I can have pears or apples (not all) but watermelon is for sure a favorite. Some strawberries, but same, not all kind, the wild one is more acidic and my stomach can't stand it either.
Also, same with berries, those are often on the top of "contaminated fruits" and since it can't be peeled, it's better to eat only organic berries.

I am still having troubles with eating apples.
I don't know why, but I did notice some brands go down easier than others.
But I have to eat them very s-l-o-w-l-y and chew the heck out of them...
Maybe I will try peeling them.

I have no problems eating apples, although I do peel them. I have peeled my apples long before surgery as I often had problem with swallowing and the skin just causes it to get stuck. By the time I have peeled, cut all the soft spots out and the core, I can eat a whole small apple as there is not much left. I also love making stewed apple, slightly burnt as it give sit a nice tang.

I have had a problem with apples since early on. I stopped trying as I made applesauce also LOL

I may try the peel method or just skip them all together. I can eat a slice if I cook pork with apples Hmm

I ate an apple today and peeled it first.
    That was much better.

Interesting information, Sandra. I had no idea about a lot of that. My protein shake is chocolate and I drink two a day. Reflux be damned, I'm not giving those up! I don't drink coffee as my protein shake takes the urge for coffee away. I eat quite a good amount of tomatoes. I have a satsuma tree that produces the most magnificent satsuma, so I eat those too. Haven't noticed any problems with them, but I also didn't pay attention either. I did not try another apple today as I've been out and about busy and havent had a chance to eat yet. Hello, migraine! Now I'm going to have to rethink trying those Granny Smiths I bought after reading your information. They've always been my favorite of the apple varieties.

It's interesting to see some of you have apple issues too. Maybe this healthy eating wasn't the best idea... or maybe that's my junkfood deprived body talking.
