    Default squeaky clean new!!!

    Hello,

I'm so new! Tomorrow I will be attending the gastric sleeve/gastric by pass meeting. I attended one 15 years ago, but was not ready. This time I am. I had 1/2 thyroid removed in 1989 and since then, I have gained. I could lose up to 15, but eating bad once or twice, brought me back up.I currently:
    am almost 300 lbs, 5'8''
    hypothyroid
    polycystric ovaries
    high blood pressure
    diabetic
    Arthritis
i'm thinking of the gastric sleeve
    I am 59 years old

I just can't do this anymore. Do you see any reason with the above information that I would not be able to get the surgery? My doctor appointment is this Thursday, March 11.

    Thank you for reading.

Looks like you would be a great candidate for the surgery! (But I'm not a doctor, so he/she would have the final say). You'll love it! I did it at 57 and it was the best decision I have ever made.

You should be fine! usually the international guideline is for patient to have a minimum BMI of 40 so no worries.
And surgeon are usually careful with patient who have heart or lung issues, that doesn't seem to be your case!

Since you have multiple hormonal related health issues, it is normal that losing weight on your own is almost impossible.

The sleeve can give you a big help. The only thing is that with hormonal issues, you can expect a slow weight loss (been there done that).

But it doesn't matter because even if it's slow, being persistent with healthy food and exercise will get you to a healthy weight!!

    Good luck and take care!

Congrats! This is by far the best decision I ever made!

I had many of the health issues you’ve described. I had them for years. They’re gone now.

I was 63 when I had my surgery and today I feel better than ever! :-)

    Hi,
I'm a newbie too to this forum,
I'm 40 and considering having a sleeve done. I had a gastric band done in 2010 which I failed with. I had this removed in April last year after being sick everyday for nearly 8 years.
Since the removal my weight has escalated I too have thyroid issues so loosing weight is a mental issue as I feel I have failed at everything. So I feel like the sleeve may help me take control of myself again.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

You haven't failed, that band has failed. My surgeon stopped doing the band about 5 years ago based on the poor results. The sleeve works great as long as you are committed to doing what they tell you. I had such an easy time of the whole thing, lost all my weight in 9 months. The next 3 years of maintaining were easy too, but now it's not quite so easy. I have to continue to focus on my healthy lifestyle, as I can eat more than before and could easily gain back my weight. But I refuse to.

You look like you are ready for the life change and medically need it. They do run tests such as EKG and psyche evaluations but you do seem like an ideal candidate. Good luck and welcome to our group!

Thank you for all the support. I attended the meeting last night. It's like everything is falling into place like this should work and this should be perfect for me. All these years I didn't mind exercising and dieting, but I never saw the results of losing mores than 15 lb. The frustration and sadness that you get from trying so darn hard for so long and just not getting anywhere... it's definitely not a lack of trying. 15 years ago I attended one of these meetings and I realized ... no I can do this on my own. Now I'm ready. I retire in three years but at this rate I'm not going to have a good retirement because I will be so achy and crippled from the arthritis and the weight. So my doctor appointment is this Thursday and I'll go from there. Thank you all for the support I really need it.

I'm in my early 50's and will be having surgery 4/29 so I applaud your decision and understand where you're coming from entirely. We are never too old to begin a journey towards a healthier and happier life. My journey has been a bit different as I was always the skinny girl all my life until I hit 45. I've gained 100 pounds since then and have tried every diet on the planet, pills, programs, nothing has worked. I refuse to live the best remaining years of my life overweight, no energy, high BP, and borderline Diabetes.

Congratulations on making your decision and I wish you the best of luck! This a wonderful place to read and gather real information from people who have 'walked the walk'.

    All the best.
Being sleeved (at 54) is the single best thing I have ever done for myself.
You are going to love it!
