    Default Just curious

Hey y’all hopefully you are all doing well. I was just wondering if any of you got hungry a couple days after surgery while on the post op liquid diet? I feel a bit hungry is it because it’s liquids? And once I move to the purée stage and solid stage will it get better and will I feel fuller faster? Or is this weird I’m not feeling full from liquids?

I was told I would prob not feel much restriction at this point because you’re still swollen from surgery. I’m allowed only 8 oz of fluid an hour even at 11 days post-op. Even once I moved to cottage cheese and yogurt, I’m only allowed 1 tbsp for a total of 2 meals. I checked with the nurse case manager and she said the ‘hunger’ you feel is probably just acids churning in the stomach. I’m never totally full unless I drink too fast and then I can feel it. Is it possible you have head hunger?

    Hey Katelyn,

No worries, right now it does feel weird without any solid food, that's normal. Take your PPI (Nexium, Omeprazol or other brand) each day at the same time (it's supposed to be more effective if you take it in the morning) and you will feel better.

As soon as you will be eating soft food with protein, you will feel your restriction right away! I remember well my first puree split peas, and then later chicken, one bite and I was full!

    Take care!

I didn't feel full until I was on solids. And then I still had to have a bite of food every hour or so. A lot of the hunger you feel initially is acid reflux mimicking hunger pangs. And eventually it is because you can't eat more than a bite or two. I eventually started eating a bit more and then I could feel full. You may want to see about taking an antacid like Prilosec. Talk to your doctor. Just keep following the rules, though, as it will get better.

Glad to see you posting, I'm getting a lot of useful info for my upcoming surgery. How are you feeling overall?

No, I didn't feel hungry those first few weeks. I was drinking protein shakes.
