    Default keto

Hi, everyone! Long time stalker, first time poster. I'm having gastric sleeve surgery on June 6 in Tijuana (if the border isn't closed!). Any way, I'm just wondering if those of you who have had long term success with this procedure would classify your current eating habits as primarily following the keto lifestyle?

Hi Parker, No I don't think I follow keto. I think that keto makes people miserable but that's just me. I eat a varied diet of all the food groups and have lost my weight successfully. I think that when you have been overweight you get saturated with all different meal plans and opinions and of course you have to do what you feel is right for you. I lost 40kg before my surgery by not eating anything with a barcode. Eat widely from all the food groups and just avoid processed food is the healthiest diet to me. Carbs are not the enemy (for me)...
Good luck with your surgery and do come back and let us all know how you are going and ask questions and what not :-)

I lost my weight and have successfully kept it off by eating whatever I want... a whole lot of junk. People here will say I'm an anomaly, but nah. My mom (sleeve), dad (sleeve), daughter (sleeve), sister (bypass), and niece (bypass) all have eaten terribly (shame) and every one of us lost all our weight and kept it off. I truly think it's because we never stopped eating the junk so our bodies didn't get used to not having it then go nuts when we had it again. I'm not saying I recommend doing it our way, but our way worked for us. Everyone has to find their own individual path to success. You'll figure it out when it's your turn.

I definitely don't follow keto. I do concentrate on eating good protein first but I also include veggies, and some carbs in the form of fruit, crackers or the odd piece of whole meal toast. I also have the odd cookie, ice cream, and piece of chocolate ;-).
I am maintaining on track at the moment, but if that changes I will readjust my eating. I basically eat "normally" just small amounts.
All the best for your surgery.

I don't follow a diet, keto or otherwise.
I did do low carb right after surgery for a couple of months.
However, I started introducing carbs back into my food after a couple of months and slowly worked my way up.
    Healthy, complex carbs that is.
I still don't eat sugar, white flour (products), potatoes, white rice, alcohol.
I don't see the necessity or added value of doing keto at all.
I am very carb sensitive, but I eat around 100 grams of carb per day, give or take a few grams.
And as you can see, I am very successful, I can say in all modesty...
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

I don’t follow a “diet”. I eat whatever I want/need to stay healthy. I mostly follow the basics. I stay away from anything that I’m sensitive to...if it makes me sick I don’t eat it again. We each find what works best.

Eat how your surgeon/nutritionist tells you. You are no longer going to be on a "diet" like Keto. The sleeve works, just follow the rules! Best of luck to you.

I am almost 2 1/2 years out. I do not eat keto style. I did go low carb in the beginning and I would classify my maintenance diet as lower carb. I focus on protein and veggies first....as I think most sleevers do...and then I will allow some carbs. I do eat unhealthy carbs such as sweets as well but I do limit them. I also strength train regularly and walk as much as I can daily. Park farther. Take the stairs. All little extra habits to keep my health a priority. I also weigh daily as it keeps me honest with my eating habits. That being said...anyone who is sleeved and can manage a keto diet will most likely be highly successful if that is a lifestyle they can follow. I personally do not like to be too restrictive as it can backfire on me mentally.

I had my surgery in Asia (was there for work) and the guideline was actually made more for asian patients. Too much carbs for me. So I looked at what was done in the US and what was done in France, looked at stats and saw that at the end low carbs lost faster but also regained more at 2 years...so at the end, all diets had almost the same results...but I mostly looked at how my body was reacting.

So I was eating a moderate low carb, when I reach my doctor's prediction, I was eating a little more carbs.

Right now it's a little complicated because I've been really sick since last Summer, and my meds made me gain a lot of weight. I'm still not eating that much carbs, but will eat a little less in two weeks when I can start to exercise again.
Carbs are not the enemy but for me too much carbs and my weight get stuck. At the same time I can't go to less than 50gr per day because it does mess up my metabolism, and then I'm in hypoglycemia...(a specialist at the hospital told me in January that hypoglycemia is a side effect of the sleeve! I had no idea...for months I though it was dehydration since the climate was hot)

The most important for me was to eat enough protein, and veggies. Many veggies, or cheese have carbs. The first year I didn't really eat much of pasta or rice (stomach didn't like it much) but had sometimes quinoa or a steamed small half potato.

Eating out, rice was everywhere so it was sometimes a challenge to find what I needed, but my Chinese got better and I could recognize a few veggies my stomach did tolerate and would ask for those as a side dish. My issue at that time was to be able to buy the right protein because sometimes we had to face shortage (organic eggs, chicken that was a story) European cheese and my yogurt was in store only every three weeks so I had to be careful not to miss the day the container arrived at the store! When I came back in France and was eating "more" in variety I also suddenly lost more weight than the previous months...because at that time I was not eating enough!

I did study nutrition. At the end of the day, the diet you will decide to follow is something you can do on the long run. Pick things you like, your portion will be tiny : always look for quality.
Healthy doesn't have to be boring, I use lots of spices and herbs to get more taste. It's important to avoid a routine, and get bored.

    Default Re: keto

Hi Parker, I also had my surgery in Tijuana March 24, 2015, so I'm a little past my 4-year surgerversary. I am beyond thrilled that I had this surgery and don't regret it for a second. I followed EXACTLY what the eating plan was until I was at the point of making my own decisions. I got well below my goal weight during the first year an a half but have since put on the weight I wanted to and I dodn't look like I'm sick anymore. I don't follow Keto, WW or anything for that matter which is why I had the sleeve so I no longer had to diet for the rest of my life. I will tell you it's REALLY easy to fall into the crackers, cookies, candy syndrome because they are super easy to get down which is why they call them slider foods. These aren't good food choices and not healthy but at times during my transformation all I could eat was crackers. They were the only thing that didn't bother me and I could eat enought to feel full. You will figure out what works for you as time goes on but I must insist PROTEIN, PROTEIN, PROTEIN each and every day for a minimum of a year but ideally for the rest of your life. The protein is a huge part of your initial weightloss and because you're not eating normally it helps to get the nutrients you need for your body to survive. Also WATER is huge in the beginning to prevent dehydration, just sip it because even though I'm over 4 years out if I chug water I will start that wonderful frothing of the mouth. I have to say of all the things I ccould miss it's chugging down a bottle of water that I miss the most. In the beginning you will eat like a bird, not want to go to restaurants or eat in front of anyone that isn't aware of your surgery but I promise as the years go on that all changes and life will be normal again just with tiny portions. I usually order appatizers unless I want to take home leftovers which is perfect. You will do wonderful and have great success as long as you follow the rules to a T before and after the surgery! I wish you the best of luck and hope you fall in love with your new body as much as I have! And don't look at this as a diet, you need to change your mind set and view it as your new normal way of life. The word diet is so damaging and puts so much pressure on us so the sooner you get that verbage out of your head the better your success will be.
