    Default pre-op diet

Hey yall. This is my first post on this site, and I was just wondering if the liquid diet pre-op was as difficult as it is to me. I feel like im starving on this diet. Will I feel this hungry after surgery? I know I wont be able to eat as much, but will I still feel starving like I am right now. Were yalls pre-op diet hard to get through too? Any advice? My surgery is April 4th I have been on this diet for four days, and I have 11 left.

There’s not a lot I can respond too because this is all new to me too.

But I have been on my pre-op clear liquid diet since Saturday 03-16-19.

I get a little hungry and that’s when I drink more water. I try to drink continuously water .

I drink chicken and beef broth to have something warm. I’m drinking 4 protein shakes a day.

But I sometimes have to walk or do something to keep from thinking about eating .

Last night at work the guys ordered pizza and kept offering me a piece, that was hard.

But I held true, didn’t eat and went for another walk. It’s a mental thing for me.

I’ll drink and drink and drink more to keep from eating.

It’s not been unbearable, but it’s not been easy for me .

Good LUCK !!!.... you’re not alone . I SO HOPE ITS ALL WORTH IT !!!

And I’m in NC toooo (Western NC)

I'm in NC as well I'm 18 months post VGS.

Yes, the pre op was difficult but the point is to shrink your liver to give the surgeon the optimal view and operating field and a tiny tiny incision. So keep on! I had a headache till the 4th day, then it was okay.

NO, I have not been hungry once in 18 months. I'm older (than y'all) and feel great. My weight has been relatively easy to maintain (about 2lbs +/-). And I hit goal pretty quickly.

Yes, so worth it. My health is way better!
    [I]HW: 240 lbs SW: 199 lbs GW: 140 lbs

    1 MO = 167.0 2 MO = 156.4 3 MO = 148.4 4 MO = 140.6
    5 M) = 136.0 6 MO = 130.0
    1 YR = 122.0 2 YR = 140.00 2.5 YR = 139
Happy with my weight; happy with my size; over-the-moon with my health!

    Hi.
Yes the pre op diet wasn't the best but it wasn't really that bad either as I knew that it was for a finite period of time and that I would have a great tool that would enable me to lose weight and keep it off......if I worked at it :-)
It's just one of those things that you have to suck up and get on with if you want the surgery.
Drinking lots of water helps and is good practice for after surgery. Doing something to help distract you might help - exercise, knitting, reading etc.
It really is worth it to stick to the pre op diet. It will only help you in the end.
    All the best.

I struggled the first 2 days and then it got easier from there. I agree it’s mind over matter. You just have to continue getting in your fluids anyway possible. I am able to do sugar free jello and sugar free popsicles both of which help when my sweet tooth acts up. I like Crystal Light and Mio which helps with making sure I am drinking enough water (I am not a water drinker), but make sure they are the caffeine free kind. Hot broth and hot herbal tea (decaf) seemed to quiet the hunger pangs for a bit. Before you know it, your hard work will pay off. I’m 3 days away from surgery and never thought I’d get here.

I start day 8 tomorrow of the pre-op diet. The shakes I've made have kept me from getting really hungry. Also, eating meat has helped immensely! I've eaten a little more than 4 oz. but it's all protein. Tomorrow starts the tough part - truly liquids until surgery! Hang in there, it will be worth it!

I was lucky to only have 5 days.

Don't worry, after surgery you won't be hungry.

Good luck, it's totally worth it!

I was lucky that I only had to do 3 days of the liquid diet pre op. It was rough. But I know some people have to do much longer pre op diets. I see you are already post op so congrats on your surgery.

Mexico Bariatric Center told me with my low BMI that I would only need to do the pre-opt diet for 2 days.
