Default Joint / Muscle pain months after sleeve surgery

Some one I know is going through this right now.
Pains, inflammations, immobility in joints and muscles.
In Europe we do not eat as much protein as here in the US.
Our hospitals recommend 0,8 grams per kilo body weight, for me (as an example) that would be around 40 grams per day.
I, personally, am still not exactly clear on this.
I eat around 80-90 grams per day, which is considered ridiculous.

But the question is: could these pains originate in the small amount of protein?
Het doctor is putting her on NSAIDS now.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

I wouldn't think so, but I have more joint pain now myself, especially in my hips. I am actually wondering if it is because I don't have the fat padding around the joints that I once did. Sometimes too MUCH protein can cause gout, but that is likely not going to be out problem. 0.8 g per kg of protein is standard nutrition therapy for the US as well unless there are other medical problems to consider. After our surgeries, some of the surgeons push for more, but I think that is because they know we will have less time for digestion, and quite frankly, doctors tend to prescribe more protein (just like more medication) because they know that there are so many non-compliant patients - they figure if they recommend 70 grams of protein, the patient might actually get 45 grams. At least that is the thinking of most of the doctors that I have worked with over the course of my career...............

Sorry for jumping in here - I've never posted before but I've been lurking for some time, lol! Is your friend taking any medications? This can often be a side effect, even if she has been taking a particular medication previously without issue. Manufacturers change, formulations change, and our own bodies response to a medication can change - same thing with vitamins and supplements. She needs a through workup with lab testing. Could be an electrolyte imbalance (magnesium, sodium, potassium, vitamin D) or onset of an autoimmune problem like Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am NOT an expert by ANY means, just have seen this quite often in my work.

I was so disappointed when after losing 135 lbs ( I still have 100 to go) that I actually walked worse than before... My personal trainer explained my new pain like this.... you are used to walking one way for so long... with all that weight. Now that you have lost the weight your body needs to learn to walk differently.../the pain comes because you are moving differently...stretching the muscles differently etc... He has me doing some physical therapy type exercise which has helped a lot!

    Hi Simonne!

So there is several options here:

Is your friend losing weight? As someone did say it could be coming from the weight shifting, the gravity center being different, the way she moves could trigger different points. The pain could go away after some adjustment. It does take time (I had sharp pains for several months the first year, then it went away).

I don't think too much protein would be an issue, but getting a blood test and check the uric acid could clear that point. Is your friend diabetic? most diabetic are more likely to develop gout or issues with joints because of the disease.

Long story short, from my experience of those past months hell, I gained weight with the huge dosage of cortisone, even gained 6 kgs from my surgery (March 1st, 2 days in hospital, was eating like nothing, again, it's from the meds...) so far lost 4.5 kgs but still have to lose 1.5 kg plus all those kilos from the cortisone who seem to go nowhere . But since I can't really exercise, it's going to be a very long process.

So to help with joint pain, I did increase my Omega 3 daily intake, try to massage the area with essential oil (diluted in plain oil) as soon as pain is showing but I also try to limit my cereal intake, sugar/carbs, and lactose intake as well (but fermented cheese is ok, goat milk supposed to be better), since it could be a trigger.

There is several natural options to try here before going with the toxic NSAID's but most doctors know nothing about nutrition or natural remedies, which is sad because NSAID's are a real poison for the body and should be used when nothing else worked...just my 2 cents..

Thank you all for your input!
What I got here from all the answer:
It probably has nothing to do with nutrition or protein intake, maybe an electrolyte imbalance .
    Could be medication related.
Could be a weight shifting/moving differently issue.

I am sure she is taking all her vitamins and supplements.
She is not on any specific medication, nor does she have (at this point) underlying health problems.
She does get physical therapy for her pains, so maybe that will give some relieve in the next couple of weeks/months.
I will pass on the rest of all your wonderful suggestions!
Thank you all so much, I really love this board!

Nutrition could actually be an issue. Not because of too much protein but because of "too much something else".

I did write about that French doctor a few months ago. His diet is really hard to follow, but the concept does make lots of sens

    https://www.seignalet.fr/en/the-seig...rinciples.html

Cutting a few things might help.

For the blood test, looking for uric acid is important but also D vitamin. This is the end of winter and most people are deficient, after a sleeve, D vitamin deficiencies could be higher (that's my case). Deficiencies in D are linked to joint issues.

I was really deficient in January from my last blood test (and I take 10 000ui per day!) so I had to have 400 000 a month on top of it to help. Seems to be working...but it's hard to know exactly what's working! I also did increase my omega 3 intake, and take more curcuma too...but right after surgery with 6 more kilos showing up in two days I could tell my joints were screaming...it's better today..

    Thank you Sandra!
    I'll pass it on.
I find it hard to say, what is healthy eating and what is less healthy.
All these different opinions, all these different diets.
It is hard to find the holy grail here...

I take NSAIDs now, not every day, but most days for the joint and muscle pain I have now from being overweight. The paperwork I received from one of the surgeons says that after surgery, you absolutely cannot take NSAIDS. It says you can never take NSAIDS ever again after surgery. Has anyone heard of this? I don't like to take them, but sometimes I can't get through work without them.

So much good information here. As Sandra3 said, there are a lot of natural remedies and supplements - glucosamine/chondroitin, MSM, curcumin, Omega 3. Also avoiding what are called "pro-inflammatory" foods. It is surprising what are considered pro-inflammatory - yes sugar and carbs, but for some people also "nightshade" vegetables like tomatoes, eggplant, peppers (my personal favorites).

If your friend is taking a statin drug for cholesterol, one side effect is terrible joint pain. My cardiologist has us take Co-Q10 (OTC) and the pains went away.

Re: Protein, at 18 months out, I hit 70 grams of protein in my day. So I don't think that's it. Depending on her age, it could be some new systemic issue that happens as we age....

But prayers for comfort and a good answer.

Some cholesterol meds can cause those symptoms. I know my mom had to switch to a different medication.

I assume that you may have arthrosis or arthritis. The onset of the disease is characterized by joint pain when the arm or leg twists. More and more often in the morning, stiffness of movements worries, which can last several hours. The clinical picture is added by swelling and redness in the area of the joints.
In addition, protein does not affect the joints in any way. It forms muscles and helps to build them up. Therefore, men often increase protein-containing foods in the diet or look for Testolone for sale to provoke faster muscle growth.
Try to see a doctor and drink a course of anti-inflammatory pills.

If you constantly consume red meat, it may be uric acid forming in your joints that causes pain and discomfort. Limit your protein to chicken breast, tuna, and other fatty fish.
