Default So I知 on the fence...

Started my 2 wk pre-op liquid diet last Wed and actually doing better than expected. Lost 4.5 lb, small victory. Problem is, with one week to go, I texted the Bariatric nurse to ask if I lose enough weight, could insurance come back and deny surgery at last minute (I知 on the borderline of qualifying for surgery and 10 pounds could make difference). Nurse said to add back in 1 meal a day and 2 protein drinks until 3/23 which is 4 days before surgery and then go back on liquid diet. Im wondering if I should keep on diet anyway because I don稚 want stomach or liver to be an issue to prevent successful surgery. Any thoughts?

I, personally, wanted to know for certain I have done my part in going into the surgery.
I would make sure (I did make sure) that I have done all I can to shrink my liver, which is the only goal here.
The pre op diet is not for loosing weight, just for shrinking the liver.
Good luck on your upcoming adventure!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

In my case, insurance only checked the weight at the first consult, not right before the surgery, but all insurances are different.

My pre op diet was different from most. Since I lost weight slowly before surgery, my surgeon asked me to go low carb, have protein and veggies for lunch and dinner, and 2 protein shake per day.
I was actually going for 3 shakes one dinner (something got lost in translation with the nut) and doc said at some point " I was losing too much" (please don't make me laugh) and told me the night before the surgery that I could have a "regular dinner" for my last night since I've been doing so well! I didn't go crazy and had grilled chicken and veggies...no dessert...

The surgeon said after the surgery that my liver was great and he could see I did put a lot of efforts to get to that result. I do have NASH like most obese people, actually had it before being obese. So it was really important for me to stay away from carbs since my liver was most likely to brittle if I didn't... I think whats important here is to stay focused on the weight loss until surgery...you might want to check with your insurance directly to know exactly what are their requirements regarding the weight loss.

I was suppose to start my pre-op diet yesterday 03-18 but I ate my last meal Friday night 03-15..

I have done ok, I have twice sub-consciously thought it痴 time to eat, hunger pains.

The only difference I have noticed so far is I知 light-headed. I stand up and it takes a minute to clear my head

I知 sure it痴 just my imagination, but yesterday and already today it痴 like I知 in a fog. It痴 like I知 not as focused

as normal. Anyone else ever experienced being light-headed pre-op ?

So, I ate dinner last night (the first solid food in six days) and felt like I cheated, so I’m back on the liquid diet. I agree it would probably be best for my health if I kept going. Just needed the reassurance that what I am doing is the best option.

Russ, my first 2-3 days I felt tired and a little ‘spacey’ but after that it didn’t bother me as much. I still have hunger pains and I am horribly embarassed by the sound my stomach is making. I think what is worse is making all my favorite foods for my family’s dinner and knowing I’m going to sit down for beef broth, LOL, or when the staff at work brings cookies, donuts or orders out, EVERY DAY. But I keep it together and I know what the end goal is.

I’ve not had major hunger pains, but regular thoughts of “I need to eat.” My stomach isn’t happy and reminds me of a dog growling.

I have my pre-op day tomorrow so I’m focusing on that as my next step. I’ve never ate jello or popsicles but found I like them. The issue
So far is my 83 y/o mother in law who lives with us heard “Sugar-Free and she’s finished all of them . (LOL) my wife said honey u can’t
eat jello and a box of popsicles. I said “I’ve had one cup of jello and one popsicle”. Granny spoke up and said “ I didn’t think you should
eat them either and they are a good snack for me.” My wife said “Mommy !!... she said well I don’t like either one of the broths. But if
You buy more get chicken it was the best.

So far this journey has had more twist and turns than anything I’ve done.

But like u said “IM DOING IT”.

Do whatever your surgeon tells you to do regarding your pre-op diet. You could talk to the person at your hospital/clinic that handles insurance the question about your weight before surgery.

I think I am in love with your Mother in law! :-)

With your positive attitude you will do just fine.
