Default 1 Month Post-Op and Pancreatitis!

I am one month post-op. The good news, I have lost 19.7 pounds and my stall seems to have just ended (I plan on doing my measurements tonight). The bad news, I was sent to the ER yesterday and I have pancreatitis.

I ate breakfast yesterday and took my vitamins about 20 minutes later I was in the restroom as I felt like I needed to throw up and I was spitting up blood. I called the nurse advise and they sent me to the ER. After all my labs returned I was told I have pancreatitis and I need to be seen by my surgeon. The ER Dr. emailed my surgeon and I called to leave a message. As I now I have not gotten in contact with him and I have an appointment to see him Friday at 10am. The ER Dr. instructed me to only have water and broth until the surgeon says otherwise.

I felt like things were just getting back to normal and now this.

Here is my one month picture. The left is this morning the right is my surgery morning.

Has anyone else dealt with pancreatitis post-op?

Thank you. I actually just spoke to my surgeon and he said it is a really weird case as I don't have my gallbladder and I am not an alcoholic. So he ordered extra blood work for me to do today to check some other deficiencies. He said try and stick to eating actual protein and not protein shakes for now. As long as I am hitting my water goal daily until it is figured out I should be OK.

    Hello Cassie,

It's great news for your weight loss progress, but I'm very sorry to hear about the pancreatitis.

I was also sick at about 3 weeks post-op, my surgeon made me come to his clinic right away.
Since I have my gallbladder, it could have been a stone. He also told me about pancreatitis but scans and my enzymes (blood test) came back normal so it was just a kind of stomach flue.

My surgeon did tell me at that time (and I did look it up because I was worried) that it could have been pancreatitis because my symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea etc) were similar (my skin was also yellowish so could be also a sign -jaundice-) , and if the blood tests were going to show a problem with the enzymes, next step was an MRI with biopsy.
He also said that pancreatitis can come after a surgery to the stomach. Most time it's like you were told, when people have a stone in their gallbladder, or if they are alcoholic. But it can also show up for no reason...who knows!

I hope for you it's just a punctual issue, it could very well go away by itself, not all pancreatitis are chronic.

I saw my surgeon many times for all my post-op, and we did discuss in deep the few issues that did develop post-op. For example, my anemia got much worth post-op. We first thought that because of the sleeve side effect, my absorption of iron was worth but I noticed in two years that my gyn issues got worth too and was diagnosed a few months ago with adenomyosis (I already knew I had endometriosis before the sleeve).

My bariatric surgeon did tell me that after the sleeve there is many changes in the hemostasis and it could explain why my symptoms got worth. At the end I had to nip it in the bud and just had an hysterectomy last week because we couldn't control the bleeding's and it did affect my health on many levels.

One might say that my issues got worth because of the sleeve, but I do believe that surgery did save my life. I'm also at the age where gyn issues can get worth, so we will never know if the sleeve did trigger it. But my main issues started before the sleeve anyway, just got worth after. The most important is to treat the issue and be aware of potential issues that can appear post-op. Because in an other hand, my health got much better on many other aspects post-op (for ex arthritis pain decreased a lot), so it did balance the increased anemia.

My best wishes for a fast recovery.
    Take care!
