    Default Smart BMI

Anyone seen this? Someone told me about it at weight watchers today.

According to the regular BMI chart I'm at 25.5, so overweight until I get under 25. (Only a few pounds actually).

But according to this one that calculates your sex, age, etc I am at the optimal weight and they don't recommend going any lower. Huh? I guess BMI is just a number, but maybe this one was invented to make people like me happier!

But I still want to be skinny. Like I've said before, I need mental health help.

Well, you know who invented the BMI scale in the first place, don't you?
Yes, exactly, manufacturers of weight loss pills!
So almost everybody had a high(ish) BMI! LOL
And we still use that stupid scale...
So, yes, it is just a number and a very stupid one as well..., so a new one is very welcome

    How are you doing?
    Lost some pounds yet?
And no, you do NOT want to be skinny.
I am skinny, I am not pretty, like you.
I'd much rather have some more curves, to be honest.
And boobs... they are so sad...

I am glad you feel happier!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

I've used this one since I started VSG - I did it this morning from your link.

"Your body mass index (BMI) is calculated as exactly 22.1 kilograms per square meter." I'm 5'4 and I put the age in as 67 since I will be in May.

I think you've nailed it - somewhere in our head we have "perfect numbers" for age, weight, height...now BMI.

Perfect is wherever your life is full of things you love and joy in daily living; it's the hope through the sadness. Pretty sure its never a number.

So we are good! (Now lets convince our heads)

    1 YR = 122.0 2 YR = 140.00 2.5 YR = 139
Happy with my weight; happy with my size; over-the-moon with my health!

BMI is only accurate for a few people.
The majority, with a big muscle mass, many pregnancies or just heavy bones....is out of charts!!

I found that this page (the Elle magazine, sorry in French, translate your page with google chrome) is almost giving me the same result I got from my surgeon!!
    Try it!

I tried this one with google translate and it says I am 10 lbs underweight and my BMI is too small for 67 with 5 pregnancies....

I think its in how we look. My body is kind of "square" vs pear or round. I have no "backside" to speak of and sit on a padded cushion on my chairs and in the car. I have a bit of a tummy (after c/secs and multiple surgeries) So a BMI of 22.1 for me looks okay to me....

I didn't know that about the BMI scale. I am losing, but very slowly. 3 pounds so far in a month I think. But we're skiing and snowshoeing again this week, so if I eat right and drink a lot of water, I should be good! We drove so I packed a lot of healthy stuff.

Pretty cool, right? It actually says I'm right in the middle of where I should be. So I need to stop my negative self talk and concentrate on being healthy.

BMI is a terrible standard. There's a great graphic here https://www.psychguides.com/interact...erage-athlete/ to show it. Basically according to BMI the average professional football player is obese and the average professional baseball, hockey, and golf players are overweight. Basketball is barely normal along with UFC and Nascar. Even Tennis players at 22.75 are in the upper end of the normal range.

Lebron James at 6'8" 250 pounds has a BMI of 27.5. Does Lebron James look overweight to you?

Tom Brady at 6'4" 225 has a BMI of 27.4. Does Tom Brady look overweight to you?

I have always said the BMI calculator is a bit wonky. I am thin at 108. Some people think I am a bit too thin. When I am at 113 I look a lot healthier. According to the BMI calculator I can be as low as 92 pounds. I can tell you at 92 lbs I would look like a crack head. LOL.

I think the most important thing I have learned from this is that we all have negative self talk! I should celebrate the weight I have lost and not dwell on what I have put back on. I am going to make an effort to get back to a better place, but I am lucky to have stayed pretty solid for over a year.

BMI is a funny thing. Larry Scott is a good example.. At 5'8", 205 lbs, Mr. Scott won the first Mr Olympia bodybuilding title at the age of 27.
According to the BMI experts, his BMI was 31.2 -- well into the "Obese" range, and so far from accurate it's laughable.

Bodyfat percentage is a more accurate assessment of obesity, not a BMI chart that depends only on the parameters of age, height, and weight.

When we lived in Asia, I received a note once from the nurse at school, who was saying that my youngest was "severely obese" and she included a BMI chart that was the one for Asians.

I had to reply back that she needed to get her facts right, because she used the wrong chart, that being "westerner" it was normal she was heavier.
And yet, on the one for westerner, she was indeed at the beginning of the overweight part, I knew that...but was not worried. And I was right, with proper nutrition her weight is stable, plus she walks at least 5 kms per day so it does help her metabolism.

Although I believe that height/waist ratio is a very good calculator.
