    Default Liquid diet

    Hi!

I'm about to have my surgery in 12 days. I saw the Dr today for my pre-op and I have put on 7 pounds in 2 months. He now wants me to do protein shakes for 1 week. I'm so frightened I can't and won't stick to it. I told him I will do my best. Originally he told me no pre-diet required. Now I have 5 days before I start. Please any words of advice.

    Thank you friends!

    No words of wisdom here.
Just do it, saying in advance you may not be able to do it, is a selffulfilling prophecy.
    You will get through this.
If you get headaches from the detoxing, drink plenty of water too.
I loved my salty bouillon as well.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Gaining weight just before the surgery makes your liver bigger, that's why your surgeon wants you to follow a protein diet. This will help make your liver smaller. During the procedure the surgeon needs to lift the liver to have access to the stomach. If the liver is still big and fatty, lifting it can damage it, making it brittle.
Since I have "fat liver disease" like many obese patients (run in the family, I had it even before being obese) being strict with the pre-op diet did help a lot and my liver was not damaged. Focusing on that aspect, did help me a lot on doing my 2 weeks pre-op liquid/protein diet. The worth was the first three days, but after that it was fine. You can do it!!!

    Good luck and take care!

You can do it! Get a good protein shake. The Protein Power and Atkins that have 30g of protein are pretty good in the chocolate flavor. They also keep you pretty full. Try to keep your mind busy. Play some games on your iPad or phone. Take a walk. Turn the TV channel if food commercials come on. Do what you can to take your mind off of food. Organic bone broth in both chicken and beef are really good and offer 8-9g of protein per serving. Sandra3 is right on about the fatty liver. Trust me, you want your surgery to go off without a hitch. A week of hard work and inconvenience now will be worth it when you're getting your surgery and you breeze through the procedure because you followed your Doctor's orders and reduced the size of your liver.

My pre-op diet was a little different. For the first 5 days, it was a protein shake at breakfast and lunch, then a normal dinner. The last two days were all liquid. All doctors are different, but I followed my doctor's orders to a "T". It was inconvenient, but my surgery went super well because the Doc wasn't fighting my fatty liver to get to my stomach.

You can do! Just buckle down and think about being on the other side, losing weight and feeling great! Good luck!

You just have to do it! Saying you will do your best really isn't good enough. You need to be positive :-)

It is one week out of your life and the end goal is a new healthier life.

I had to do 3 weeks of optifast which was basically 2 protein shakes and one protein bar a day. I really wanted to change my life and the way I looked at it was that it was for a finite amount of time and the surgery was the reward at the end.

I guess your success all depends on how much you want to change.

I would suggest getting a few different flavours of protein shake as just one would get pretty tiresome. Also pop the shake into a blender with some ice cubes as this makes it a little more appealing.

I still have a protein shake every morning for breakfast. It's quick, convenient and gives me a good head start on my protein content for the day.

Start getting used to sipping water all the time while you are doing it. This will help keep you full and be good practice for after surgery. Get a water bottle and keep it with you at all times and just keep sipping.

Also as a distraction start going out for walks if weather permits. Just a few minutes here and there will make all the difference....or maybe read a book, knit, whatever to take your mind off and hunger pangs that you may have.

    You CAN do this!

PS I just re-read this and it sounds a little harsh. That's not my intention. Believe in your self. You are the person who will control your success.....and I know that you can do it!

All the best and keep us posted on how you are doing please.

Thanks so much about the suggestion of bullion. I have a brand new one I bought and will put that to good use!

Stick to it. You say "you can't and won't stick to it." Don't have the surgery. You need to follow the rules, especially at the beginning. They are to help make your surgery safer.

After the first 2 days, during which you may have a boomer headache from sugar/carb withdrawal, you will suddenly fill lighter, clearer, no headache, and more energy.

Enlarged liver prevents the surgical field from being as clear as possible, and could require open incision -- so as everyone said, "get er done!"

It really isn't that bad, I promise. All I can tell you is my excitement and positive attitude helped me lose all my weight. I did the pre-op diet while vacationing at a friend's lake home, watching them eat gourmet meals and drink wine. But guess what, the next year I was at the same lake looking like a normal person in a bathing suit! (Hadn't worn one in years, I'd sweat at the beach in my capri pants.)

I compare it to having a baby. Pain for a moment, and then an amazing miracle for the rest of your life. (And this surgery is nothing compared to childbirth).

Please don't go into this saying stuff like I can't or I won't. You can and you will. You are a strong woman and can do this!

Just remember to keep your eyes on the prize. You can do this. Just remember that it is going to make your surgery easier for your surgeon by shrinking your liver. It will suck for a few days but you can do it.

It sounds weird to me because you can't consume only liquid-like protein shakes. You need to eat some vegetables, fruits, and fish. When I was at school I always had some extra pounds and I couldn't lose them till I graduated from school. Four years ago I found a great diet on this site ketodietapp.com, which is called a keto diet. And it was a miracle for me when I started to lose weight and felt great. I wasn't aggressive like other people who are on diets and don't eat anything and always are stressed and sleepy. I found a lot of useful information about losing weight and about maintenance my body healthy and sporty.
