    Default Burping and Gas

Sorry, too much info, I know. Since my sleeve (I am out 5 1/2 months) I have had a difficult time burping after eating or drinking. I do burp to some extent, but not enough. Throughout the day (sometimes, but not every day) my stomach rolls, gripes and grumbles almost all day long and feels tight and miserable. I was wondering if anyone has this problem and if there is anything that might stop it from happening as much. I wonder if GasX or something similar might help. It is so annoying. Thanks for any help.

I did read people might have difficulties burping after an hernia repair. Do you know if you had that surgery done with your sleeve?

Yes, I had hernia repair the same time as the sleeve.

Besides the basics, after a hiatal hernia repair, there is not much to do unfortunatly.

Basics would be no straw, no fuzzy drinks, eating small meals etc...

But also if your stomach is making so much noise, are you still taking a PPI? because from experience, when my stomach is not happy, reflux is to blame...you might consider asking advice from your surgeon and make an appointment.

    Take care

Thank you so much, Sandra. Yes, I'm taking a ppi, I don't do fuzzies or straws and I eat small meals. It doesn't do that all the time but probably about half. I try to not eat a lot of gas causing foods. I will take your advice and contact my surgeon. There's usually no pain but much annoyance.

    Your very welcome!
I hope your surgeon will be able to help!

During my first year post-op my stomach was very sensitive, and I couldn't stand cruciferous veggies at all. Took me a few try to understand what was happening. Now I can have a little cauliflower or pepper bell (2 TBS) but too much can make me feel sick. So the sensitivity is still there.

Same for alcohol. I was never a drinker but even a little alcohol hidden in a meat sauce (in a restaurant, they actually didn't mention it on the menu description) made me instantly sick (I was may be 5 months out) and today I only have one sip to try a new wine but wouldn't drink even half a glass.

So one idea could be to keep a food journal for like a week, with one side being meal time, a full description of you food intake, include everything even vitamins supplements, drinks etc. the other side the symptoms you have after that meal, when it's starting for how long etc.
The best way is to have meals with only a few ingredients at a time, just to be able to eliminate issues faster.

For example, you could have some kind of food intolerance without knowing it (it's less obvious compare to an actual allergy), but also look for itchy skin, runny nose etc..

I hope this will help you find the issue too!
    Take care,

Thanks to all who posted here. I had hernia repair with my sleeve and had no idea that could be responsible for so much gas and belching. I was thinking I had developed lactose intolerance, or was eating to much or too fast. I’ve done all I could to remedy these things and still you can hear my tummy from across the room! Appreciate the thread!

Interesting topic. I also had a hernia repair but have not had any issues with gas - just lucky I guess.
I hiccup when my stomach has had enough. That is my sign to stop :-)

I had issues with lactose myself, for may be 6 months post-op.

There is many aspects of the sleeve (for ex interaction with hormone production from the stomach) which have not been studied so my surgeon said that many things could change post-op, but for most, it should be back to normal after a few months.

I also had hiccup when full. May be mostly the first year. I was always measuring my intake but the density could change how my stomach would react, hard to predict.

There is several kind of hernia repair, depending on the size of the hernia, the kind of damages made to the hiatus (the little space/entry on the diaphragm), if it did require to put a patch or not etc...
It seems the worth recovery is when the hiatus is very large and the hernia is bigger than 5 cm.

Also when there is a patch used for the repair it seems there is more issues post-op but it should all get better under 6 months.
