    Default Burning questions

I am considering this surgery and have made an appointment with a surgeon.

I am female, 40 yrs old.

Has anyone experienced thinning hair or hair loss after the surgery because of the changes in nutrient absorption?

I went through the menopause the same year that I had my gastric sleeve.
My hair never thinned, and I now have the thickest head of hair I've ever had, not only that but it's wavy after being straight!

I think almost everyone experiences a little hair loss, but it's only severe for a very few. And it grows back.

I would look at it this way, would you rather stay large or have a little less hair for a while? It seems to be a no-brainer to me!

    Good luck with your decision!

I had lots of hair loss - that said, pre surgery I was not ever good about vitamins & protein, and have lost my hair to chemo 3 separate times. This time, I think because of the vitamins, protein & biotin and hugely improved health, it's come back well. Still gray and curly, but lots of itt.

I’m 3.5 month out. I have had zero hair loss. About two years ago I was on meds that made me lose like 40% of my hair. My hair finally was back to normal before surgery and it was a big worry of mine to lose hair again. Thankfully I didn’t. I eat way healthy than I did prior to surgery. My friend also had surgery about 1.5 years ago and didn’t lose her hair. I do monthly vitamin B injections and take two kids chewable vitamins a day.

Hairloss is caused by the trauma your body goes through during surgery. Everybody’s bodies handle stress differently. I didnt notice any hairloss but my hair stylist notice some hair loss and it all grew back. I wouldnt worry about it. Its only temporary and the weightloss is an amazing feeling.

The hairloss is due to the operation itself, that can happen with every major surgery.
With a sleeve there is no nutrient malabsorption.

It does however strike me time and time again, that this question seems to be "burning".
Hairloss is a small price to pay and it grows back.
    Your health is priceless.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

You are so right! I wouldn't trade my "sparse" hair period for my restored health. And its kind of cool to watch it reboot!

I'm 4.5 years out, bpendery. What others have written above is quite true. Hair loss happens to most people who have major surgery like WLS. But the loss is temporary (typically, as in my case, about 4 months). Then it all grows back.

BTW, NONE of my hair loss was visible to anyone, including me, except in the shower drain. I literally collected it every week for a few months to see how much more was falling out over time, and, in my case, at my hair's most rapid loss rate, the weekly hair loss amount was about twice what it was pre-loss. In other words, no big deal.

Yep hair loos here too. Started at about 3 months and went on for about the same amount time.
It wasn't noticeable to anyone except me. Just kind of thinned out a bit.
Back to normal now.....and if that was the worst thing that happened to me I'm really ok with that considering all the benefits WLS has given me.
