    Default Feeling Overwhelmed

I went for my initial consultation and meet with a NP and came away with appointments with the dietician, psychological evaluation, upper GI, blood work, stomach ultrasound, and initial visit with the surgeon. On top of it, my spouse is not being very supportive and thinks I should wait a few months (she thinks I'm rushing in to it). I feel like it's happening too fast.

It WAS really overwhelming at first. I remember all the classes, tests, everything started to become confusing. Vitamin requirements, protein drink requirements, it went on and on. But it became easier and was oh so worth it. Mine happened quick as I was self pay, no time to doubt.

Hope your spouse gets on board, her support will be the most important of anyone's. But why wait? There's nothing better! Good luck!

If it's what you really want, all the prep and the classes and all the medical things you have to do are all worth it in the end. It takes a lot to stay in tune with everything, but keeping a positive attitude helps because you want to look at the big picture of how you will look and feel in the future. Hang in there and best of luck to you. You are making a good decision!!

I had done my research before my first appointment and as I was self pay I had my surgery 3 weeks later and that was only so that I could do the lover shrinking preop diet. I couldn't wait! It's such an exciting time.
My partner was surprised when I told him that I wanted to explore the idea of bariatric surgery but totally supportive because he wanted me happy, healthy and around for a long tme. My partner also came to the initial appointment with me as he had questions of his own to ask. Maybe include your spouse too?

Hi. I started my process on 1/7/19 and between the test i have completed and appointments already scheduled between now and the middle of March I will probably be complete the testing portion in the early Soring. Since I have to do 6 months as required by my insurance company I am probably going to have a period of waiting before I am given a date. It may seem fast but if any health issues are revealed in your test results that require treatment or attention, it will add time to your journey. In 2008 I tried to get the lapband surgery and it was sidelined by an enlarged thyroid requiring surgery. I didn’t get the lapband (thank goodness) because I was scared of the pain I now associated with surgery and I also did not have a supportive spouse making the decision easier to not have it. I regret waiting all these years, but I am ready now and I am actually quite impressed at how streamlined the process has become. I returned to the same surgeon/Bariatric practice and it’s obvious to me they have really figured out how to make the process easier for patients. So If youare really ready I encourage you to create the kind of experience you want to have in your journey and enjoy it. I hope your tests return with good results and whatever pace you decide to take, you meet the goal we all have, to be healthier.

Yes - the NP mentioned to bring my wife to the appointment with the dietician and the surgeon.

It appears I have to be in a supervised weight loss program for 3 months and show evidence of 5% weight loss before my insurance will approve.

It is definitely a good idea to take your wife so she can ask questions and have her concerns addressed which I hope leads to her support during your journey. While i wish I only had to do 3 months I appreciate having the extra time so I can read as much information about the surgery and what I will have to do post op as well as utilize this forum and YouTube videos that gives me insight into the journey of post op struggles and triumphs. I wish you the very best Bob but again if your concerns are things are moving too quickly, you can easily slow them down to a suitable pace by spacing out appointments in an effort to give you and your wife the time you need to become informed and feel comfortable with aspects of your journey.

It is all overwhelming when they tell you all the tests and doctors you need to see before having the surgery. It all goes by so fast and will give you the reassurance that every precaution has been taken to ensure that you have a smooth and successful surgery. It will be the best thing that you will ever do for yourself.

Yes, do include your spouse as people have said. I knew someone who's spouse was very against it and then when included became their biggest supporter. I really love my sleeve and its changed my life :-)

Thanks everyone that has responded. My wife has decided to go with me to Friday's nut appointment and my initial consultation with the surgeon. I started with a 1400 calorie weight watchers diet about two weeks ago and I've already lost 7 lbs. I'm also started doing a food diary which really shows how much I was overeating. I had a follow-up yesterday with my primary care and my blood pressure is down to 115/80!! I getting myself mentally ready for the surgery.

Kudos, Hudson Bob! My health has improved SO much in the past year since my surgery. 13 less medications, no HBP, no diabetes, no angina, no high cholesterol -- a new lease on life. Your wife will be tickled to have you back to you!

Bob, you're doin' it right! I'm glad she's going with you. My husband (who was already 100% supportive) went with me to my first surgeon visit. I always included him in everything he wanted to be included in, although he had great confidence in me and trusted my decisions. Still, I think he appreciated meeting the surgeon.

And, of course, he had to sit outside in the waiting room while I was going through surgery. And that is NEVER a fun experience for anyone who loves you! I know ... I sat through several of his surgeries, too. That's one of the things we signed up for when we said, "I do!", eh?
