    Default Non scale victories

    While going through the requirements to get VSG I keep myself motivated by watching Youtube videos of sleevers who are sharing their journey and I am always excited to hear about the non scale victories because when, like myself, you have been dealing with lifelong obesity you learn to ignore or simply deal with certain challenges that non obese people don’t have. For example in recent years, back pain from carrying all my extra weight has made walking difficult whereas walking at a time was my favorite form of exercise and I could and would walk miles. Now I find myself unable to walk a full city block without experiencing pain or wanting to sit down. For me, a non scale victory would be able to walk my dog around the 2 mile perimeter of my local park with ease. So to all my sleevers, both new and old— What have been some of the non scale victories experienced in your journey?

    Hi Nomoreweighting

    Gosh, great question.

    There really are so many.
    Walking uphills with my dogs is brilliant now I used to groan as we started out from our home to get out we have to climb the hill and I used to be puffed out too!
    I can now ride my bike 40 mins non-stop
    Seat belt in the car is comfortable.
    In bed, I can lay without a wad of fat causing discomfort around my chest, my neck, my stomach, my butt. my legs

    I can wear anything and get ready to go out casual and feel good in anything that I pull on to wear.
    My hair is in a new style that would have made me look so dreadful when I was heavier it now shows off my face so I am not hiding.
    My makeup looks good - I felt like a drag queen before too large face and pantomime dame springs to mind, this really hurt me more than anything.

    I feel the benefit of looking younger in body and face so I was considering some treatments or surgery for my face prior to losing weight that I simply NOW don't need.
    crossing my legs!
    Feeling healthy.
    My mind is free to roll thoughts around that are new instead of guilt and goals that I was a slave to regarding how to lose weight.

    I can enjoy food all of it, but I make different choices because I want the energy of the nutrients in the food that I now eat at every meal, not the old thoughts that were created by how to lose weight.

    An example I will have steak tonight with garlic and black pepper and a variety of vegetables stir-fried with bean sprouts in Worcester sauce tangy and spicy and gorgeous.

    I have just had bacon and avacado and tomato for brunch and could not finish it so I gave the rest to my hubby as he loves bacon and its a treat living here in Turkey.

    So Many.....

    Abrupt end to 60 year history of migraine headaches was by far the best non scale victory for me. Others (in no particular order nor level of importance):
    - walking a pleasure not a chore
    - stair climbing without aching knees
    -looking at photos that included me to re-live the moment and not being self-conscious of my size
    - not feeling like most overweight person in the room
    - buying clothes with some style rather than because they covered my bulges
    - not having "lose weight" as New Years resolution
    - tucking blouse into jeans
    - needing to shop because all my clothing too large
    - finally telling my husband how much I weigh
    - participating in more social events
    - defending against the thoughtless remarks about obesity as a choice
    - not having to pay to belong to WW
    - not feeling ashamed to make an occasional higher caloric food choice
    - lower restaurant check because of splitting with husband or doggie bagging for future meal
    - not having annual physical report list weight loss as a goal for me
    - realizing the shallowness of several individuals who suddenly "liked me" more after I lost weight
    - realizing how shallow and self-absorbed I am about my weight at the expense of missing out on Life
    I could go on but I think you can get the idea that this was truly the best gift I have ever given myself. (I was self-pay).
    I don't know I have ever acknowledged some of these items before, especially the last item! Responding to your question was quite cathartic for me. Thank you.

    GREAT question!

    I second everything everyone's already said (except for Sally's now-gone migraines, which I didn't suffer from. Congratulations, Sally, that must be a great relief!

    I may come back later and list my NSVs in more detail later (don't have much time right now), but MOSTLY I am grateful for the return of practically unlimited mobility. I can walk EVERYWHERE at any gradient for as long as I want. I NEVER have to not go somewhere because I'm afraid I "can't make it."

    I've worked hard for that ability, simply by walking (small distances at first, then a little more, then more, then more and more). And three years of serious yoga practice has strengthened my body tremendously. In 2019 my goal is to add more muscle mass by lifting weights (although at 73, my body fat is only 22% -- my August 2019 goal is 20%).

    In short, I'm back in the fast lane of life again.

    P.S. Also clothes, clothes, clothes! LOL!

    Very long story....condensed.

    Las Vegas. Zip line down Fremont. Speedo. Ice bucket challenge. Elvis impersonator.

    What happened in Vegas was videoed and somewhere on the vast interweb, a copy exists. So, it most definitely did not stay in Vegas. I’ve seen it and would like to make it disappear.

    But, I could not have pulled any of it off without my weight loss.

    A much expanded explanation of the video exists on this site somewhere if anyone is interested.

    Thank you for sharing...I could not help but smile at the thought at how dogs must feel when owners lose eight and get energized to do things that may not have been possible before. Congratulations on all of your victories!

    There are so many but the main one is my knee not hurting. Crouching and getting up hurt my right knee so bad. I don’t have that pain anymore. It’s amazing. Literally 2 months after suregry it stopped.

    So many....and few in no particular order:
    Being happy
    Being healthy
    Having so much energy
    Being able to play with our grandchildren and run, yes actually run, around with them
    Clothes shopping - this is a biggie! :-)
    Going for long walks with my partner and discovering new places that we haven't been before - and actually enjoying the walk.
    Attending yoga classes - who would have thought?!
    Being in control of myself for the first time in my life and making good decisions about what I eat and what I do.

    Oh Em Gee! How much time do you have?

    Every minute of every day I have non-scale victories! These include:

    * Lack of pain
    * Nearly limitless mobility
    * Zero concerns about how I look
    * Wearing size 4-6 clothes
    * Looking 10-15 years younger than my actual age
    * Energy to burn
    * Enthusiasm and fearlessness (well, NEARLY fearlessness) about trying new things and new adventures
    * An enjoyment of cooking and eating that I've never had before (I love food now more than I EVER did prior to WLS)
    * Self-confidence without over-compensating for being the biggest person in the room / group
    * Being physically fit because I'm so physically active now

    I'll stop there ONLY because it's time to cook and eat a delicious dinner.
