    Default Question about medication post-op?

    Hi All,
2 months after finishing all the requirements 2 months ago, I'm hoping I'm getting close. I received a pre-surgery questionnaire about an hour ago and I did it and submitted it.

During my nutritional appts the lady told me I will have to crush my meds for the first 30 days. I was told I will have an appointment with someone that would go over it with me, but would like to hear how those of you who had to crush did it and got it down? I'm very worried this will make me nauseous. Can I got on liquid meds for a month?

    Thanks so much!

I had to do crushed meds for 2 weeks, these were my regular daily meds like anti-depressant, BP & sleeping meds. They were not appetizing by any means, but I got them down with just a smidge of applesauce. The pain meds they gave from the procedure were liquid, but do be careful with those...the first dose they gave me in the hospital I downed like a shot and it promptly came right back up! Do take the whole "sip" thing seriously, even with your liquid meds.

Problem with going on all liquid meds for a month is that some are not available that way because of timed release. My program had a nurse who went through it all with me and I asked a couple questions of a Pharmacy Manager, I'm fortunate that I work in a hospital so had that resource available. Ask as many questions as you need of your team. That is what they are there for.

I cut them into tiny pieces. I made an oblong pill like 5 pieces. Otherwise I’d vomit it all up.

I think I spoke with you on the board before. I'm having my surgery through the same hospital/affiliated Dr. I'm having surgery with Dr Anwar. I saw a nutritionist named Gretchen. She told me I would have to crush my pills for 30 days and they would send me to a person before surgery to go over this with me. I'm still worried about getting them down as I take quite a lot of meds right now.

I just got a email in my mychart asking me to do a hospital questionnaire, so I'm hoping the call soon to give me my surgery date. I've been waiting 2 months since I've finished everything.

    Thanks for the advice!

Dud you just take little pieces and slowly take them? I can't bare the thought of just shoving them in crushed. Ugh!

My surgeon told me to stagger my pills throughout the day... meaning, take one with one sip, wait 15 minutes and take another. The first two weeks after, I only took one pill every hour because he said that they could get caught in my my stitches.

Yes, getting caught in the stitches seems a theoretical problem. My problem is I take quite a bit medications. Right now I take 8 capsules a day with just 1 medication. I hope I can get it in some other form as I need it for neuropathic pain.

Thank you for the ideas. This sounds like a great plan. I may never good food down trying to get these pills down. Oh well, eventually it will all be better.

I was taking 18+ pills a day pre-surgery, added 2 after surgery. I took mine with sips of my protein shake too. I did cut out 3 pills until I could swallow more than 1/2 ounce at a time. The first couple weeks will be just liquids anyways so you'll be able to get your protein in at the same time as your medicine. Good luck!

If they are small pills (like aspirin size), you could probably swallow them with a tiny sip. Otherwise I'd ask a pharmacist how they recommend crushing them. I don't thing you can crush anything time-released, but I could be wrong about that.

Good luck! I was only on cholesterol meds, and my doctor had me off them for the first 3 months, so I didn't have to worry about crushing anything. But surprise, after 3 months I was back on them as my number skyrocketed. Totally hereditary for me.

My doctor required I crush my meds or take Liquid meds for the first month. Every doctors requirements are different. Some meds are available in liquid form and some only come in pill form. Not every med can be crushed in a pill crusher. You can buy a pill crusher at must stores. I got what I could in liquid and crushed the ones that weren’t liquid. The first week is cl liquids and 2 week was full liq. Doing liquid stage one I mixed crush med in small amount of apple juice and sipped slowly. Took nausea meds ahead of time if I thought I would get nauseous. Then at 2 week I used applesauce much easier. The antibiotic I had was a capsule so I just cut very tip open and pour out powder. You can do it. Think positive and tell yourself you can do it and you’ll be surprised how much better it will go.I was on lots of meds and prone to nausea so I understand your concerns I wish all the best in your upcoming surgery and hope you do ok with the med process. The time will go so fast.

I have always had trouble swallowing pills so years ago I bought a pill crusher. I've never had a problem doing this. My surgery is in 7 days and I intend to crush my pills after. Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine.

YES! I had surgery with Dr. Houseworth, he's Dr. Anwar's partner. I met with their Nutritionist too, it was Deanna, but Gretchen also works with the Support Group so I know her too. Have you connected with the Support Group through there? Remind me, are you doing sleeve or bypass? You will have an appointment with a Nurse that goes over meds and such. They gave me a pill crusher in the hospital so I didn't need to get one on my own.

I also work at the OR at St. Francis. I'd love to say hello sometime when you're up there for an appointment or class. I'll come see you before and/or after surgery too if you'd like. Let me know if you are interested to connect!

I was told to crush my BP meds. Did it for like 3 days then started taking them whole. No issues. Crushed would make me gag.

I know I was on quite a bit of meds before the surgery: blood pressure and a water pill, allergy, bipolar, GERD... I was told if the pill was the size of a tictac or smaller, I could swallow it whole. Since some of these were time release, it was important to keep them whole. The GERD medication, omeprazole, was a capsule. I was told to open it and mix with a bit of applesauce. Thankfully I didn’t have any issues. As for vitamins, I had purchased vitamins from unjury.com which were baristric specific and are chewable. Otherwise my vitamins are a lot larger than a tic tax.
