Default Surgery approval with previous heart surgery?

I had surgery a few months ago out of the country/self pay. My mom is very interested in surgery now too. Her insurance will cover it if she jumps through all the hoops and is approved. However, she had heart bypass surgery last year. I imagine a cardiologists would also have to clear her. Has anyone dealt with this? I don’t even know if it’s an option for someone who has had heart bypass or what? I just set her up with a seminar. If anyone has any info/experience let me know. Thanks!

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but on my board in the Netherlands was indeed someone who had had heart surgery previous.
I believe he had bypasses and a stent.
The only problem was his bloodthinners, which he took on a daily basis.
He had to stop those before the wls and that took some coordination between his cardiologist and bariatric surgeon.
The surgery was performed and he is doing very well!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

    Mmeghan,

I don't think the bypass will be an issue if she gets the cardiac clearance. When I was "jumping through the hoops" last fall, before my sleeve surgery, I had to get clearance from a cardiologist due to abnormal EKG, stress test, etc. During the process, I had a cardiac cath, just to ensure my heart was good to go. Thank God it was, and I had no blockages. But my cardiologist assured me, even before the cath, that even if I had blockages, and worst case scenario, needed a bypass, I could still do the surgery later on, after the bypass. If I remember correctly, I think he had said within 6 months to a year after the bypass, I could do the sleeve surgery. So the fact your mom had a bypass last year, I would think she would be either be "in the clear" or very close to it. Of course it all depends on her cardiologist giving her the clearance. Any physician that I've dealt with along the way has been super supportive of sleeve surgery due to the health benefits. Good luck! I hope it works out for you mom.

It all depends on If she can pass the test the cardiologist gives, in my case an EKG. And if she is on blood thinners she will most likely have to come off for surgery. If her doc thinks she is healthy enough for surgery then she should be ok. I would recommend she go to her heart doc 1st before the other hoops.

I had a triple bypass that failed after 6 months. My cardiologist quickly approved me because this surgery is known to help with co morbidities. I did have one visit from cardio after surgery for an echo, but that was based on my particular issues.

I have NO angina after being literally an angina invalid even with medication. We were getting ready to get a stair lift because I could no longer do our stairs, nor walk more than 1/2 block. And no angina since 2 days after surgery.

Also down from 17 meds to 4 and I was 65 last year when I had surgery. So just have your mom be very candid with her doctor, and be sure you understands tool versus cure. (I know I'm preaching to the choir._

You do need cardiac clearance or at least that was part of my process through insurance. As long as there are no issues with her bypass she will probably be approved. Best bet is that she should ask the surgeon she is considering right away. I am sure they know.
