    Default Question about Soup

Okay so I am only three weeks out from surgery and have a question...how does soup work with the 30/30 rule? If it contains liquid and a solid (like chicken soup). Is it going to cause you to dump? Can you eat it? Do you only eat clear or broth based soups and does it count as a liquid or do you wait the 30 minutes and count it as part of your meal (purée/soft food/etc.)? Since it’s winter and cold outside I would like to have a warm cup of soup, but I don’t want to risk dumping. Thanks.

That is a very good question. I had the same dilemma.
I just decided that soup was a food and didn't drink 30 mins before or after it.
    I didn't have any problems.
You want to get some nutrition out of the soup so don't want to "wash" it through your stomach too quickly with other liquid.

Others may have a different opinion though :-)

First of all, with a sleeve people rarely get dumping syndrome, that's a bypass thing.

My nutritionist did not advise soup, I guess because of the water content and that don't drink with meals rule. But in the beginning I did eat a lot of soup, it appeared to be a healthy choice for me, primarily protein and veggies. I would eat chili, chicken soup, split pea, whatever.

like Lisa said, I never drink before or after a meal, same for soup.
When on full liquid at about 3 weeks out, I was having veggie soup with mixed protein in it. I only made sure to not have too much of it, keeping in mind the size I was eating at the time, was probably about 1/2 cup.
But I had to make sure for months not to eat pepper bell, or cruciferous veggies, made me really sick.
Split peas was one of my fav, and full of protein. Same for lentils.

I was told to chew even the tiny pieces of chicken in cream of chicken soup and to not drink while eating it because you will lose the protein it gives you. I still struggle with soups that have solids and liquids in it. If I want to drink the juice from the soup, I wait til 30 minutes later after I've eaten the solids. I have had dumping syndrome twice. I know I didn't overeat but I am sure that it was because I ate too fast. It is a HORRIBLE feeling so chew lots, swallow a little at a time and stop when you feel satisfied. That 'stuffed' feeling isn't a great feeling either. You will do excellent. The first few weeks are like a training period and this group is wonderful with answering questions.

I had no issues with soup. I usually had the creamed ones but I do eat regular soups with no issues and have since the beginning. In the very early phases I did smush up the veggies.
