    Post Surgery on my birthday?

    Hi
After 6 months of pre op appointments, medical tests, dieting I finally received insurance approval and a surgery date. But it’s on my birthday! And so close to Christmas that it will interfere with my family’s traditions. My husband is very supportive and has offered to have meals catered and support me anyway possible. I’m just worried I won’t feel well enough to participate.

So excited, nervous, and anxious .....

    Welcome here!
I don't know when your birthday is... lol
So I can't help you really.
What exactly are your family traditions?
Just a quite day with your nearest family or hosting a gathering with 20 people?
The first you can do after a couple of days, the latter will be challenging.
But take your rest and naps when you need them, watch your drinking and protein intake, that is the most important.
    Your needs before anyone elses.
    Happy birthday and good luck!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Surgery on your birthday will be the BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT YOU WILL EVER GET! Isn't Christmas about spending time with friends and family? Or if you are religious, celebrating Jesus' birthday? Enjoy the holiday, and congratulations on getting a date. From a before Christmas birthday girl. You didn't mention how close to Christmas, but if you nap before the event you should be fine. And your husband sounds amazing!

I spent a weekend at a friends lake home doing my pre-op diet, drinking protein shakes watching them eat gourmet food and drink wine. But I had a great time, and got to enjoy the swimming, boating, fishing, etc. The following summer I was looking good in a bathing suit, so totally worth it. When we make everything about the food we know how we got fat in the first place!

My birthday is the 21st. And my 3 adult children and grandchildren will be here for thee week following Christmas.
I hadn’t planned on telling everyone, but looks like I might have to.
Other option is to wait until January. And then will have to pay my deductibles.

It would make an amazing birthday gift. My BDay is the 21st.
I guess the reality of having to tell everyone, something i did not want to do.
Will I feel well enough to enjoy the 26th thru the 31st?

You can say you had your galbladder taken out and are recovering.
    Or something like that.
You probably need to take some naps during the daytime, and as for your fluid diet: well, that has to do with your gallbladder removal.
Just ask everybody to pitch in, and help you and you'll be fine.

It would be too bad, if you had to pay extra money, wouldn't it?

Darn it, I already had gallbladder removed. That would have worked perfectly.
My family will be very good about pitching in. I just need to think of what to tell them. I just don’t want to hear the negativity like, ‘you don’t need that’, ‘why would you do this ‘... the usual.

Did you know that even with a gallbladder removed you can still develop stones in the duct?
    Maybe you can use that?

Or you had a hiatus hernia fixed?

If your husband is supportive, then that's all you need to back up the "why" questions. Your health is or should be #1 and they may even be happy for you if you tell them the truth. My mom didn't want me to have it. She was adamant about it from the very beginning but it was my health that I had to get in order. I had my surgery on October 11th. 2 weeks before 2 of my kids birthdays (I always make and EAT the cake), 20 days before Halloween (6 kids bring home LOTS of chocolate, 6 weeks before Thanksgiving (my favorite time to cook my favorite foods)... I was almost devastated that I didn't get to have all that stuff but now I'm not. 7 weeks post op and I'm down 39 pounds. My back pain isn't as bad as it was. If I'm being honest, I grieved the food which open my eyes to how addicted to food I was. If your family loves you, they will support you 100%, whether they agree with your decision or not. My mom did. Good luck to you!

You can figure out what to tell them. I didn't tell anybody (but hubby and two friends thousands of miles away) and I continue to be so very, very, very grateful that that's the way I did it. It really worked for me.

As someone who lost/gained/lost/gained ad infinitum everybody just thought I was losing weight again. (BTW, I didn't lose all that fast -- see my sig block below.) The last thing I wanted to deal with was everybody else's ignorance. Just imagine how much you've struggled to understand VSG and WLS. Now, just imagine how much your sister/mother/random cousin does NOT know about WLS. And imagine how much more you'll know in a year and how ignorant your random relative will STILL be.

My opinion, obviously. Others' mileage may and do differ.

P.S. Regardless of the holiday timing of your surgery date, I think a birthday and surgiversary coinciding would be awesome. Again, my opinion.

Totally your decision, but telling your immediate family and getting taken care of sounds like more fun than paying new year deductibles. I would guess every other year it's you waiting on all the kids/grandkids, now it can be their turn to wait on you. Do what works for you. Best of luck deciding!

While I didn't tell many people, I did tell my children and mom. They were happy for me.

3 adult children and a totally awesome husband sounds like a recipe for you to sit back and relax and enjoy the family time and let everyone else sort out the details.
I totally understand not wanting to tell anyone. A hernia sounds like a totally believable reason to me.

I had my op on a Monday and went to a rock concert on the Saturday. Sure I sat the whole time but it was totally doable :-)

PS I am so thankful for my surgery and wanted to remember the date. So much so that I had it tattooed onto my foot. Having it on my birthday would have been perfect as I would look on it as a rebirth and start of my new healthier happier life :-)

That is the best birthday gift you can give yourself....a new beginning. And the sooner you get surgery the sooner you start your journey to a happier, healthier you. I had my surgery in early November (2 years ago) and went through all the holidays around my extended family that did not know I had been sleeved. I had no issues whatsoever. I was happy to not be overeating but already on my way to the new and improved me.

I'm not scheduled yet, but it should be January. NY Dr initially told me late December or early new year. Ny nutritionist said, more like January.

Would I do it before Christmas if I could? Yes!

Do you have to do a pre-op diet? That would probably influence my decision. I do not, so the sooner the better. My daughter wants me to wait until after the holidays & is probably best, because she will be helping me and it will be less hectic. Sounds like whatever you choose, you will be un good hands. Best wishes!
