I’ve read from a few people that they continue to have upset stomaches, nausea from food smells and even vomiting for up to a year after VSG. How common is this?
I can tell you that I only had dry heaving immediately after surgery. Throwing up was rare. It was a few times bc the vitamins didn't settle well but I always had issues with multi vitamins prior to surgery. When I began using the gummy ones I stopped having issues with my vitamins. I also had a few times were I overate and did throw up but those were rare. The more common is the "toad froth" which is where you kind of have some slobber and slime come up but not actual vomit. It is gross but only happens when you eat too fast or too much. Once you learn your full signals it doesn't happen often.
At the beginning i only had dry heaving first few hours after surgery. Then it was rare until until i hit 16mos postop. Turns out it was related to my history of acid reflux, gastroparisis and the sleeve wasn’t the right choose for me so I required a revision to a bypass. However I did loose the weight and got rid of my fatty liver, diabetes, reversed my CHF( congestive heart failure ) reduced my meds by 7. No longer have high cholesterol and High triglycerides or high LDL. No longer have obstructed lung disease/sleep apnea. Good Luck to you
I still get nausea every now and then and I'm over a year out. Sometimes it's from the weirdest things. This summer, a sip of unsweet tea had to come back up. That was probably the weirdest. Also, high carb foods don't usually sit well and make me nauseous. It's really learning your new stomach and learning what it can handle.
I only had a couple of instances where I actually vomited (and only small amounts) and that was with fresh salmon which I used to love but now doesn't love me for some reason. I have has a few occasions where I have had "toad froth" probably from eating too quickly or too much. I learnt that I shouldn't have my vitamins on an empty stomach (just felt really queasy) - still can't. I was lucky that the anesthetic didn't affect me at all. Other than that no issues at all really.
I'm 4 years out. I still have nausea and vomiting. It was terrible the first year, and landed me in the hospital a few times. Though I still have it, I am able to keep myself hydrated and well now.

NEVER happened to be and it's been 5 years. I wonder what the statistics are, how many get it and how many don't. I was lucky!
