    Default Alcohol use after VSG

I needed to post about what has recently happened to me. I am ashamed and disgusted with myself. I used alcohol the other night and I had vsg surgery on August 10, 2018. I became so intoxicated and my husband called the police on me because I was acting so irrationally. I was combative with the police who showed up at our house and the EMT. Thankfully, I was not arrested, but sent to the “drunk tank” at a local hospital. I thought I would be the one person who could drink after weight loss surgery. I’m not posting this for simpathy, just a cautionary tale that vsg really does affect alcohol absorption. I acted in a way that I’ve never acted before and I’ve never had previous problems with alcohol consumption or use. I feel stupid because the drs during this process reinforced not drinking alcohol and now I’m finding all this literature about the increase in alcoholism in individuals who have weight loss surgery. Thanks for reading. This is my first post. I’m hoping to engage with other individuals going through this process. Our biology has changed. We’ll never be the same and hopefully that’s for the better!

    Thank you for sharing this.
It must have been a terrible experience.
I am sorry this happened to you.
I know some people start drinking alcohol again at some point after surgery, but I still have not touched the stuff.
Frankly, I don't care for it anymore, so I see no point in trying.
I was never a big alcohol consumer, but it was more like a habit.

    Don't be disgusted with yourself.
You have tried and it didn't work out for you, that happens.
You probably won't be drinking again for a long time.
Trial and error, that is our learning curve.
    Thank you for your honesty!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Gosh, that was a hard lesson to learn......but learn you have so good on you!
Thank you for sharing your story. It might be a precautionary tale for others.
I have had a small amount of alcohol on a couple of occasions and I have to say that I really didn't enjoy it. Apart from that fact that I kept thinking about the empty calories I was drinking it really didn't taste so good and half a glass and I was feeing rather sqiffy. Haven't felt the need to have any more and am very happy in social situations drinking water.
I think the increase in alcoholism is some relates to the fact that they substitute one addition for another - alcohol for food. Definitely a small minority.

I am still learning that lesson, I seem to think I can drink as much as anyone else at a restaurant, dinner party, whatever. WE CAN NOT! We aren't like everyone else anymore with our tiny stomaches.

Last night at a dinner party I had to make a huge effort to have just one drink. It's not easy when the others drink continually all night long.

So sorry that happened to you, but I can understand how it happened. Don't beat yourself up about it, life is all about learning.

Awww you poor thing. I have an odd half glass here and there but thats about enough. One day you might laugh about this even if you don't feel like that now. Keep on keeping on, we all make a hot mess of things sometimes. Hugs :-)

I am able to drink with no real issues. I am sure it takes less but I do have self control with drinking. Your biggest issue is you are so newly sleeved and drinking the first year is not recommended. I did drink during my first year. Not often. Once about a month post op because I was graduating from training for a new job at work and went out with my colleagues. I nursed 1 1/2 small drinks over about a 3 hour time frame. I was ok. I guess the real take away is knowing your limits.

Thank you for being so honest.
How incredibly hideously mortifying and horrifying for you to end up in this situation.
I am incredibly sorry for you.

    My disclosure:
I have to admit that I have developed a drinking problem with alcohol - self-diagnosed "Alcohol abuse" over the past two years (I am coming up to four years post op this coming early February).
I didn't drink alcohol in the first year.
But the 2nd year I did a heap of work in the heat of summer in my yard. And found a low carb beer/gin and diet tonic/chilled white wine to be very refreshing - and enjoyable.
I enjoy it - low carb beer/gin and diet tonic/white wine.
    And I enjoy feeling intoxicated.
And my tolerance to alcohol is quite high.
And I haven't sought help. Because I enjoy it, the taste of it, the feeling of being mildly intoxicated.
And I don't own up to how much I drink.
Oh, and there is family history of alcohol abuse in my family (both parents and familial Uncle, and - unadmitted by my brother, but I copped a few of his phone call rants and abuse likewise in person last time I visited him, which was about which was about 16 years ago and I haven't been back since). So, probably I have copped the gene for alcoholism (not using this as an excuse). I am aged 55 1/2.

I can only wish you all the best.
And to help get you through your first year safely and healthily.

Hey if you ever need to chat without judgement, I get what your saying. I have a huge alcohol history in my family and I’ve noticed since not eating as much as I did, my anxiety is through the roof. If this incident didn’t happen to me, I could se how easy it would be to start having a beer or glass of wine to take the edge off. I’ve actually been using CBD oil when I’m super anxious and it really helps without the negative side effects of feeling high or under the influence. We all just got to keep picking the better version of ourselves, right! Thank you for your support ✌✌✌

Livsggirl ... so glad to see you posting on this thread again. I was wondering how you were doing. IMHO, I think you're doing "pretty good for the shape you're in."

This whole dang journey is such a huge learning experience. The lessons each of us are given are the lessons we each need. Sounds like you got a very useful lesson. I'm sorry it was a tough one. But that's how some of these lessons are, eh?

Hang in there. And keep hanging in there. And hang in there forever more. That's life. Meant in the most positive sense of "That's life!" I.e., we're not dead.

Thank you very much. I am just new to this and would like to hear the opinion of a more experienced person than me. Thank you for sharing your opinion regarding this issue.
