Question Told I have bile in stomach and should go with bypass?

I was recently approved for gastric sleeve but after my endoscopy they found bile in my stomach. The doctor told me he feels bypass is better but I am personally just not okay with that choice. He said he would still perform the sleeve if I choose, so I would love to know if anyone had bile in their stomach and still went the sleeve route and has had no problems since? Thank you all in advance!

I have no idea what "bile in the stomach" means. It's just not a term I'm familiar with. So can't help.

Sorry, not heard this before. Perhaps a second opinion from another surgeon may be in order?

I have the same problem with bile back up. My surgeon recommended I do a cross of gastric bypass and sleeve, but like you, I'm not interested in the bypass. He will do the sleeve, however if I prefer. I'm almost done with my requirements to have surgery and should be scheduled for early January. Let us know what happens. Good luck!

I like the second opinion idea. I have never heard of stomach bile.

So bile in the stomach is usually caused by an ulcer. During my endoscopy I was told I had an ulcer, h pylori, and also a hiatal hernia. I had to take antibiotics for the H pylori. The hernia was fixed during surgery and the ulcer was in a part of the stomach that was cut away. I have had no issues with the sleeve. I had a little heartburn/acid reflux the first few months but that is not uncommon with the sleeve. Once it passed I have rarely dealt with it since. Only if I eat something really spicy. I cannot handle spicy foods the way I used to.

Thank you all so much! I have decided 100% on the sleeve, but went ahead and made an appointment with a GI specialist this Friday. I am bringing my endoscopy disc and report to ask his opinion as well. I do have a mild hiatal hernia that will be fixed at the same time as the sleeve. I just couldn't bring myself to feel comfortable with the bypass.. I will keep everyone posted!

Hey guys! I went to the GI doctor this morning and he didn't seem at all concerned about the bile in my stomach and said it is actually more common than one would think. He said that wouldn't cause complications but was worried that there was redness of the esophagus and wanted to make sure everything is okay. He is sending me for 2 procedures, 1 is to do a swallow test and the second one is to make sure my stomach is moving at a proper rate and not too slowly. So I will keep you updated when I get my appointments set! I feel a lot better knowing that the bile isn't major concern and he didn't seem to think anything was a no go for the gastric sleeve so fingers crossed all my insides work like they should! I want to be thinner and healthier but I don't want to hurt myself either.

    This is good news!
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a good outcome.

UPDATE: I had a stomach scan 2 weeks ago to make sure my stomach emptied normal and that came back great! Then last week I had a swallow test "manometry" and I go for the follow up on the 26th. So, still keeping positive that I am still a good candidate for sleeve! I will keep you posted!

I never had bile or acid reflux, after my sleeve I developed bile in the stomach and acid reflux. My surgeon actually told me yesterday when I met with him that most of the sleeve patients he scopes tend to have bile in the stomach. Go with whatever you are comfortable with, it is your body after all.
I had my sleeve at 19 and would do it all over again
