fasting?

HI! I was wondering if anyone who has had the sleeve has ever done a 24 hour fast and if so how did they manage? IN that 24 hours no water is taken in either.

I can't imagine that this is a good idea. Go without food for 24 hours possibly but not water.

It is a religious fast.

Could be tricky but I'm sure someone on here will have some experience with this and will be along with their thoughts.
Have you spoken to your surgeon about this?

I wouldn't do it unless it was for religious reasons; then please ask your surgeon to be sure it is OK. Your religion may make an exception for a medical condition, and I think you qualify for that. I would think you could go without eating but not without drinking, but I'm no doctor.

While I do understand why you want to do it, I remember very well how I was at 5 months post op, my water intake was still complicated and I can't imagine I would have manage well to stay one full day without water. Of course I was in a tropical country and needed more water than under a colder climate but still, my water intake at that time was always slow and if I couldn't drink enough often I could feel it quickly, I would get dizzy!
As our friends say, religion has exception, for pregnant women of sick people, you might explain you had surgery on your GI and might do that later when you are better? take care!

HI Everyone. Thanks for all the advice and support. I will be starting the fast tonight at 6pm and I am going to try and complete it. I have been fasting since I was 9 years old and never struggled, however this year is different. Normally before the fast we have a 3 course meal, but i will now only be able to begin the fast on a much smaller meal and allot less water. Once again thanks for all the support and advice. x

Is a fairly extensive overview of the issue. Passed 18-1 by the CJLS for conservatives, can't find any reform sources that disagree, and I think there is only a bit of disagreement among Orthodox. It gives a pretty specific set of guidelines.

A vignette from another article I saw

"About 150 years ago there was an epidemic going around parts of Lithuania around the time of the High Holidays. Doctor's orders were that nobody was allowed to fast. It seemed, however, that few were willing to follow the doctor's orders. Realizing this, Rabbi Israel Salanter went from synagogue to synagogue on Yom Kippur night and, standing by the ark, he ate before the shocked crowds. Seeing their rabbi eat on Yom Kippur, the masses went home to eat as well."

Basically you should talk to your doctor about your specific place in your process and ask for their decision. This is considered to be the final word as far as the vast majority of rabbinic teaching goes especially if you are reform or conservative.
