I'm having trouble getting enough protein without using protein shakes or protein bars. But I can taste the whey protein and it tastes unnatural to me. I am not a vegetarian but I'm only 5 weeks out and I can't eat much still.
Hi
I still have a protein shake every morning to up my protein intake and I use a whey protein.
I wonder if you have tried a different flavour and/or brand? I know that some I tried were just awful.
Also perhaps you could try a different type of milk or use water?
It's probably a good idea to try and persevere if you can as it is really important to get protein in.
I do hate whey protein, and actually it does make me sick...so that was not an option.
I really wanted to like it since the absorption with whey is better compared to vegan protein.
But I had no choice and had to go vegan! there is plenty of "good "vegan options...usually it's protein from peas and/or brown rice.
It took me 3 months to be able to get enough protein per day, so hang in there, you will get there. During those 3 months I did lose a little muscle mass, but not after that so you should not worry. During that time don't forget to take your vitamins!

Have your tried the Nectar by syntrax ? I love the vanilla bean and the double stuff cookie flavors. My doctor also recommends that I use the Fairlife milk which has 13 grams of protein per 8 oz. My doctor won't allow me to use the Premier Protein which I like because it is made from milk protein and apparently whey protein is absorbed better than other types of protein and it is better for your muscles.
I hate all that stuff as well and didn't like any of the protein drinks/bars that I tried until I was post-op in the hospital. During my stay the hospital provided protein shakes in which they used Carnation Instant Breakfast Light Start. It is SO good. I drank the regular Carnation Instant Breakfast years ago and loved it. The Light Start/No Sugar Added option is very similar to the regular fat ones. I don't think I would have tried this if it hadn't been given to me. I buy the 8 pk boxes from Walmart or order it online and mix it with 8 oz of Fairlife milk. This way the entire shake is 26 g of protein (13 from the CIB and 13 from the milk). I drink the Milk Chocolate and French Vanilla and both are very good tasting. I look forward to drinking them, it's so good that it's like a treat.
THANK YOU for the Carnation suggestion....I got the High Protein vs and the Fairlife milk and can actually drink that one, don't taste the protein at all!
I typically do the New Whey Liquid Protein shots added with water and drink thoughtout the day...the tropical variety is my fave and actually taste pretty good just really sweet (no sugar added) and a whopping 45g of protein per shot. I mix them in when I make sugar free jello too for added protein. But drinking shakes is just NOT my thing so the carnation I think will work much better.
