Default Survey of solid food schedule

I'm supposed to be on liquids for four weeks, but violated orders right in the first week. I admitted it, and my surgeon was ready to tear me a new one. So, being curious, I searched the medical literature pretty darn thoroughly, and came up with exactly zero on the topic, even in the many articles on leaks, which is a serious complication that can kill you. This is the stated reason for the liquids order; i.e. solid food is thought to cause leaks.

I've seen it mentioned that surgeons' orders range from no restrictions to four weeks of liquid.

Would you all mind saying what your Dr.'s liquids schedule is?

(And if this topic has already been covered, please post a link, and I apologize in advance.)

    Thanks all!
    Fatman

    Hi there.
It's very interesting that there are very different plans depending on your surgeon.
I was started on sloppy pureed food on day 2 - could manage about 1/2 teaspoon at each meal!
The pureed food continued for 3 weeks and then I progressed onto soft foods - scrambled eggs, cottage cheese that sort of thing. After week 6 I was cleared for all foods - adding them little by little and seeing how I reacted. All the while supplementing with protein shakes.
I stuck to the plan religiously as I didn't want to do anything to jeopardise the surgery. This was a last ditch drastic measure to finally take control of my weight and my life.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello,

I had surgery on Tuesday the 28 of August. I was on clear liquids until two days after surgery. Then Friday I was allowed full, but thin liquids. I am healing "beautifully" according to my post op visit. I am allowed to start purée foods Tomorrow the 11th Of September. A week of that, then soft foods.

    Hope this helps.

Men are different from women. I watched a youtube video explaining why. Men and women have the same stomach circumference after surgery, but the length of the stomach affects the volume. For example (and most people probably don't have this level of detail) my stomach length is 22 centimeters.
So - that will affect what you can eat and how fast you can tolerate moving to different food stages.

My official paperwork from my doc was 2 days clear liquid, 2 weeks full liquid, 2 weeks mushy food, then at 30 days post-op move onto other foods as I could tolerate them.

My surgery was 8-14. I did clear on 8/14 & 8/15. For the next 7 days I did full liquid. On 8/23, my doc moved me to mushy that I had to blend.
On 8/30, I was cleared of all restrictions. I could eat whatever I wanted (still told to stick to protein, then veggies, then carbs - although I plan to avoid carbs as much as possible for the next 6 months and stay low-carb after that). I was also told 16 days post-op that I could start a full-exercise regime as well. Zero restrictions.

My results may not be typical, so I would always recommend following your specific doctor's plan. I am happy with my weight loss. I might have lost a bit more this first month is my doc had me a bit more restricted, but while I want to lose FAST, this is not a race.

Here was my eating schedule. It is odd how every doctor is different.

My doc and his center are highly rated/certified and have performed ~2000 sleeves. I was surprised to learn that they have their patients start a pureed diet on day 3 post op.

Thank you all for the replies so far; please keep them coming.

I'm particularly interested in any patients of Dr. Winterstein in Iowa. One member on another, older thread said that he had no restrictions whatever. And I cannot figure out a way to search on the "Surgeon:" field; is there a way to do this, Admins?

    Thanks again!!

I was on 2 weeks of full liquids, 2 weeks of soft/pureed foods, and then on to solids. Mine was pretty easy. I can tell you that you are absolutely right. There is no norm. There is no norm for the post op and when to introduce foods and even the pre op is vastly different from surgeon to surgeon. I have seen people with long and strict pre op diets to no pre op whatsoever.

1 week clear liquids, 1 week full liquids, then puréed . Haven’t looked beyond that since this is just day 3 postop.
