    Unhappy Can't Eat Meat

I am almost three years out from my surgery. I lost 98 lbs. I have kept it off and have no problems except that I can't seem to tolerate beef or pork and sometimes chicken. I eat it and then I feel naseaus later. Sometimes it comes back up. Is this typical? Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm just on 1 year out. I struggle with red meat and pork, but chicken and fish is fine. I can eat red meat but in much smaller quantities than chicken and it helps to have a sauce or gravy with it. It seems to weigh quite heavily on my stomach.

Has this problem just recently appeared?

No, very early on meat was difficult, but not anymore. I would talk to your surgeon or nutritionist just to be on the safe side. Hope you like fish, that is always easier on the tummy.

We were just in the Pacific Northwest with 2 other couples for over a week and made it a rule we could only eat fresh seafood for every dinner. We took turns cooking. AMAZING!

I don't do well with meat either. I made a post about it a few days ago. I don't eat anything that comes out of the water, so seafood isn't an option either. I tolerate carby foods really well, so I eat lot of them. It has not been detrimental to maintaining my weight loss.

I'm 3.7 years post op and don't have problems with meat, however I know other people who do. A friend started off by having only a tablespoon of chicken or beef, cut up about the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. She was able to finally get where she can eat 2-3 ounces but she said it has to be cut very small, must be tender, and not dry. By the way I didn't eat beef for the first 6 months after surgery. I only ate fish for the first 3 months, then graduated to ground turkey, then beef.

If I were in your shoes I would probably reach back out to the doctor to see if they can help you.

I asked my doc about this before my surgery. She told me that I may never be able to tolerate red meat again. Yeah, she waited until 5 days pre-op to spring that on me.

I hope she's wrong. But I don't plan to test it for a few months. Chicken thighs and fish are no problem. As long as they're not overcooked, chicken breasts are fine too.

I would not be too concerned unless you are having trouble getting in your protein and are nutritionally deficient when they do your blood work. If you are healthy and eating other proteins I would say you are fine. There are lots of other forms of proteins out there.
