    Default Reactive Hypoglycemia

I'll be two years out in October and have not had any issues until now. I have maintained my goal weight, and I try to follow my doc's eating plan. Unfortunately, I have found that it sometimes isn't possible, and I occasionally do eat simple carbohydrates. The issue that I'm having is that about 45 minutes to an hour after eating them, I am having hypoglycemic symptoms of fatigue, weakness, and shakiness. I did some research, and found that this is something that arises around two years out for gastric bypass patients. They don't exactly know why, but the theory is that the pancreas releases insulin anticipating the contents of a full size stomach eating a high carbohydrate meal. Because of our reduced stomach size, we don't eat as much, so there's too much insulin in our systems causing a hypoglycemic reaction. I've only experienced this a few times, but it makes me feel awful and I have to drink a cup of juice. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I found it strange that it usually starts around two years post op. I never heard of this complication.

I experienced it about two years out while exercising. I would be out walking and all of a sudden start sweating, and feeling like I was trying to walk through water. (And I'm totally used to walking/hiking long distances). My nutritionist recommended a carb and protein snack before working out. It did the trick.

Odd thing is now I don't always remember to eat before exercising, and it hasn't happened in over a year. Maybe it's something temporary.

I'm not quite 1 year out, and I get it. Its strange after having been vigilant about HIGH sugar to now worry about low.
I do, when going distances on my own either on car or foot, take some hard candy and beef jerky, or a small orange juice.
Mine drops to 56 very quickly which is dangerous. And its when I've not had protein WITH the carb.

    Learning....

Happens to me all the time still at nearly 4 years out. I've never need to check my sugars, but my dad makes it a family event when we're over. Mine is always extremely low when he checks it. It is such an awful feeling when the dizziness, nausea, and shakes come on. Thankfully it usually passes after about 30 minutes of lying down.

The research that I've read on it was based on those who've had bypass surgery. I guess it does happen to sleeve patients too. I still think that it's really weird that it generally happens around two years post op. You'd think hypoglycemia would be more of an issue in the beginning when the diet was restricted to liquids.

Reactive hypoglycemia can indeed develop in a small percentage of sleeved patients, although in a larger percentage (but not a majority) of RnY patients. But it can also change over time.

Keep doing your research and keep experimenting with what works well for your body.

    Best wishes.

Spoke too soon, went for a walk after work and it happened again! Hasn't happened in ages. I took a sub job and had no real food in the house, so made myself a PB and J for lunch with some carrots. Ate about 11 am. Walked about 4 pm. Don't know if I was hungry or had not had protein since breakfast, but hubby had to come pick me up after about 2 miles. From someone who walked 11 miles last week Tuesday. Yuck. I think protein is my magic potion.

I am almost 2 years out (Nov) and so far no issues. I will keep an eye out for that, though.
