    Default Gain weight before consult?

When it comes to meeting the requirements to qualify for gastric sleeve, I am slightly underweight. My BMI is 39.9, and I don't have any comorbidities. I'm wondering how horrible it would be to gain 5 or so pounds before seeing the doctor in order to meet the 40 BMI requirement. Thoughts?

I've known of a couple people to do this. I don't see the harm in it. Insurance is ridiculous sometimes, the fact they'll deny severely overweight/obese people due to NOT being 5 or 10 pounds heavier is crazy.

Is 5-10 pounds enough? Your doctor will want you to prove you can lose weight and insurance will want to see that too. If you dont lose weight your doctor may not approve you. If you lose too much then when it comes time to submit to insurance you may be too low.

I'd probably go for a consult first and see what your real options are. Id hate to recommend you gain 40 pounds so you can lose 30 pounds while starting the journey.

Put something heavy in your pockets if it's that close, don't gain weight just for the surgery.

I agree gaining weight before surgery is not a good idea but I dont see a choice. If BMI is 39 and you artificially increase weight you're committing insurance fraud. That's very illegal. If you only gain enough to get to a bmi of 41 great. Except for most insurance companies this is a 5 month process. If you cant lose weight first you wont get approved and if you dont lose weight the doctor likely wont approve you either.

I'm not saying gain weight but I am saying dont commit insurance fraud and find out from your intended doctors office the complete rules yo get approved by the doctors office and by the insurance company.

I'd go for a consult now and see what options there are before breaking any laws.

    Me too.
Just a few more tips: eat tomatoes before you go in.
    Those are nice and heavy.
Just 2 tomatoes are a pound... just saying.

Do not stand up straight when they measure you.
Bent your knees a little and make your back a little bit hollow, stick you stomach out.
    Every inch matters!
You can practise that in advance.

    Good luck!

Wear hiking boots, jeans, anything heavy. I'm sure my hiking boots weigh at least 2 pounds each.

I had to remove shoes and socks as they did body fat as well.

Then how about drinking as much water as you can. That will add pounds.

Don't they weigh you without clothing?
And can't the doctor feel all that water sitting there, when she pokes in your stomach?

Go to mexico. They don't require you to be morbidly obese to have the surgery. I had a BMI of 32 at surgery.

My US doctor didn't require me to strip or take off my shoes or take off my watch or poke my stomach or any such thing. I honestly don't think they ever made me take off my shoes.

And obviously wallets, keys, even half-pound weights in multiple pockets, bras, underwear, heavier jewelry, even heavier layers of clothes -- all that can weigh 5-10 pounds.

    Consult: 235 lbs
My and doc's preop diet: 216 -19 lbs

Make sure your insurance doesn't have a lower BMI requirement which can make a difference and perhaps be in your favor. I know people who have gained weight beforehand, but you have to little to gain; I agree with the heavier clothing and eat some salty foods a few days before to increase water weight gain.
