Default Something you wish you new before

So I am in the very early phase of considering a gastric sleeve, and so far, everything I have seem has been extremely positive. I am still weighing my options, and am looking for the downsides of the surgery. I know it is not without it's downsides, but am a hard time finding things people wish they would have known before the surgery. Any help would be appreciated.

I wish I had known I would want/need a tummy tuck afterwards. I have a nice fat pocket on my lower belly. Not huge but I do think I will have it removed. I wish I had known I would lose a lot of my hair. it is growing back but I wish I had known how intense it would be. This has just been my experience. Overall I am very pleased with the weight loss.

depending on how much weight you loss you will probably need skin removal surgery to look your best.
I lost 50lbs and wasn't overweight for a long time so my skin bounced back and I didn't need it. My mom lost 100lbs after surgery and she needed it.
I had mild acid reflux prior too surgery and the surgery made it much worse. I now have to take a PPI twice a day.
I can't eat a lot of foods post op including spicy foods and tomatoes. Mostly due to the acid reflux. My mom and sister had the sleeve and can eat anything. I lost of TON of hair starting at 3 months and it lasted about 6 months.. All grew back fine though.
That being said i would 100% do it again in a second.
    Best thing I ever did
    Out

I agree - I wish I knew how much hair loss I would have -- but saying that, I really was not compliant early on about the vitamins and biotin. I didn't know about the 'gummy" kind, which I tolerate well.

As to the skin, first I'm 66 and have had 4 C-secs and 2 other major abdominal surgeries. At 10 months out, I fit in a size 4 very nicely, and no thought about getting my "birthday suit" steam pressed or taken in. I think not being younger or faced with dating makes that a different decisions.

I wish I had known about the surgery 15 years ago! Oh, and I wish I had known sugar did cause breakouts, because I haven't had any since the surgery

How long did it take your hair to come back? The back & sides are doing pretty well (less loss) but the top, OMG! I look like Martin Van Buren.

Annie, I was fine until the 6th month, then my hair started falling out. My hair started growing back strong after 6 months so a full year after my surgery. My back never fell out, just the top and sides. My sides are better but my top is growing in thin. I am 56 so I think it might be age. I am not 100% sure I will have the tummy tuck but I think I should.

Thanks, Viv -- I'm at 10 months post surgery, so guess the hair will be back next year (?) I've lost it ALL 3 times with three different chemos for different cancers, but the process is different. Thank goodness for wigs.

Tummy tuck is a very personal issue. I've had 15 major surgeries and I' just don't want to sign up for anything else (hair transplant???)

I made it all the way to the 5 month marker but started losing hair at the top, and it doesn't feel as thick or bouncy as it did. But I'm not balding, but I can see my scalp in places I'd rather not see it. Have been making a decided focus on protein and vitamins, including supplemental biotin to see if I can maintain things.

Then again, it's a tradeoff. I've been on my feet all day working in the yard, doing house repairs, etc, and I'm comfortable in 106 degree Texas weather. Last year at this time, I'd gone into hibernation as I didn't have the energy or endurance to do hardly anything.

Back to the original question... the one thing I wish I knew is that clear protein drinks take like poo. I could not drink them without getting sick. And you're supposed to be drinking them the first week post surgery and the few days before. Take some time to make sure that you find something you can drink, or consider other options. I did lots of popsicles and broth to keep going, although a week without food isn't the end of the world. Otherwise, the operation went fine, recovery for first two weeks was a pain (another suggestion - don't think you can work f/t in week 2 post op), but from there things came back quickly. Wish I'd done it years ago, it feels wonderful to be at a manageable weight and continuing to lose without "dieting". Even though I am, my stomach is helping me as is charting everything I eat on a phone app to make sure I hit protein and other targets.

Just for interest, my "sleeve-sista" had fierce problems with reflux. Turns out the has a problem with food in the nightshade family e.g. tomatos, potatos, egg plant. She has had to eliminate them from her diet.

I hair started to fall out at 3 months and kept coming out in handfulls until about 6-7 months. I also was bad early on with not taking bioten and all my vitamins. My mother and sister took their biotens and vits religously and didn't have much fall out. My hair was backt o normal at 1 year.

I wish I knew not to buy a big bag of protein shake before surgery. I spent $55 on a bag of bariatric protein powder and then post op my taste buds changed and I could not stand it. I also wish I knew how amazing it was going to be and had done it sooner!!!
