Default Off Topic Nurse or Doctor Question

Nurses or doctors enlighten me please. (No one else needs to bother reading). My mom is in the hospital for the 2nd time in a week with dizziness and weakness.

Why is it you see the doctor once in the morning ONLY. So yesterday mom saw the doctor who ordered tests that were done by 9 am. She lied in bed all day, no IV fluids or anything. I ask what's going on and they tell me the doctor will be back tomorrow. I ask why she is just lying there, and they say she is weak. I ask how she will get stronger in bed, and they say she has PT and OT. Well PT walked her a few feet, and OT walked her to brush her teeth and did a few arm exercises, those to see she hadn't had a stroke. So the PT and OT time totaled no more than 20 minutes in 24 hours. I'm afraid to walk with her myself because I don't know how those gait belts work.

When the nurses changed shifts I overheard something about pneumonia. Well it it's that, shouldn't it be treated instead of waiting for over 24 hours to see the doctor again? And why aren't the patient or family told ANYTHING EVER? If she just is there to lie in bed, wouldn't that be more comfortable at home with her home health nurse? Or would that be because the hospital wouldn't make the big bucks?

She is 91 and scared to death. Actually she would much prefer death over this. Rant over.

And my new exercise program is sitting in a chair all day long.

Sraebaer. I’m sorry you are going through this, and that your mom is not doing well. I’m keeping you in my heart and thoughts.

As you know, I am neither a doctor or a nurse. I’m a rising second year MSW/MPA student though. My first thought as a social worker in training is finding out if your mom has been eating well and hydrating. It’s a Maslow hierchy of needs assessment. The elderly fall ill to malnutrition, something that’s often overlooked. Second, go to your patient's advocate department in the hospital. Ask to speak to a medical social worker, if they are an MSW (a masters in social work) they have had rigorous training in these matters and they will know how to advocate on behalf of your mother.

    Please reach out.

You need to jack someone up, sraebaer. And by that, I mean you need to jack up a hospital administrator. Seriously. Go to the head office and demand to see "who's in charge."

I've been there with my mom -- multiple times (she lived until almost 97). And I've jacked up plenty of hospital, physical therapy centers, and nursing home administrators.

Doesn't make me the most popular person in the hospital. But people sure start moving faster when I look at them.

Well when I told every staff member I saw we needed to see the doctor I was finally told "by 5 pm" and just burst into tears. (Haven't slept in 2 nights and am quite crabby.). SURPRISE, the doctor showed up right away! We are home. Mom does have pneumonia, they just never told us until said doctor finally appeared! We have antibiotics and hope they start working quickly. Thanks for the love guys!

So when all else fails cry. It scares people into action.

Shirl, Mom has never eaten much her entire life, and now that she's older she has no appetite at all. She's been 110 pounds since her teens. So now we tell her to eat more and she says she just can't. (I was always amazed to have a mother that said she was full after one pancake. If I was like her I would have saved money on this sleeve.)

    Cry?! Cry?!

I usually just grab them by the collar or tie and shake them until their glasses fall off.

I know your mom and you are both going to be so much happier and more relaxed and everything good at home than in the hospital. Congrats on getting set free!
