Unhappy Back from vacation - and osteoporosis

So we traveled a week -- it was good to see Jim's family & hometown, and for the majority of the time I did well. (Toad froth on a second meal of something that had already been ok, but that happens...)

Had Dexa Scan, and the dreaded osteoporosis so will be starting on a med that you have every two years....hoping it doesn't cause weight gain. Last year's bone loss overall was -16.1%. She did say that bone thinning happens too with gastric surgeries. In my case, age (66) and mom & sisters with it made it pretty predictable.

Anyone with experience starting the drug? Reclast IV

"toad froth" is the only description I can give for when eat too quickly, too much, or something that is not happy in my sleeve. Rather than normal throwing up, it's frothy, bubble, slippery and disgusting....TMI, eh?

My sisters and mom were osteoporotic quite early, with breakage. So hoping we're going to catch this early. Not excited about a med, but what the heck, it beats being in rehab with a broken part!

Hope all goes well with the medicine and that it helps to slow down the osteoporosis process!

Sounds good that you don't have to take it every day though Annie. Boo to the osteoporosis but yay to effective treatments x

Annie, I haven't used that drug. But I did Prolia injections (twice a year) for about three years -- and I actually BUILT more bone density with that drug.

As we know, all drugs come with side effects. So I took a two-year break from Prolia.

But I'm about to go back on it for at least another 2-3 years, starting this fall.

As far as I can tell (thus far), these new injectable anti-osteoporosis drugs are pretty effective.

P.S. I'm also very active physically - walking, yoga, aquarobics. And my doc says that's all very helpful in minimizing or staving off osteoporosis. However, there are all kinds of individual differences, of course -- due to prior drug treatments, family histories, etc. When it comes down to it, we're all doing science with a sample of only one person -- ourself.

Welcome back from vacation. I was on vacation too! Sorry to hear about the osteoporosis. Yeah, that is why they want us to take the calcium bc bone loss is very common. Fingers crossed that you have no adverse reactions to the meds.

I also had such an incident and it wasn't a good memory. In general, I like to travel a lot and I would not imagine my life without it. For this reason, it was difficult for me during this period of a pandemic in which I could not do anything and I stayed at home 24/24. I was lucky that now at least it started to allow us to travel and I planned to go with the family in a month on a trip. We have been informed from africanjacana.com about destinations that are safe to visit, ranked, and reviewed and it remains only to make the plan.
