    Default Help - Ouch Ouch

    Hello All,

I'm on my third since surgery. My surgery site hurts real bad, the gas pain are awful. I can't seem to remember what to do regarding eating, can you help me?

Is it 64 oz of water and then 60 grams of protein drink per day - if so I'm doomed, can't get all that down.

Or maybe it's 64 oz and that is water and protein combined?

the gas pains keep going across my chest, above my breast - is that normal. First one I though it was a heart attack.

I'm not so tired, just very painful. The hydrocodone liquid helps but it's so bitter i can hardly take it.

I feel so stupid. I have my notes just cannot seem to find the answer about how much to drink. Thank you so much for you help.

    64 ounces of water
    60 grams of protein

Yes, it's hard at first, but keep plugging away. You'll get there.

The MOST important thing very early on is not to get dehydrated. If you do, you can wind up back in the hospital on an IV. You do NOT want to go through that.

Sip, sip, sip. Go for an ounce or two at a time.

    You can do this.

Ohhh and pains across the chest is pretty normal from the wind pain. I freaked out about that too! I hope you are tucked up in bed with your adorable puppies and they are taking good care of you. It really is sip, sip, sleep, sip, walk, sip this week. Do try to take your analgesia medication if you can as that will help you a lot at this stage. You will feel much better next week. Best wishes :-)

Your protein drinks count toward your liquid requirement too. Just sip every waking moment and you can do it. (You have to, or you'll end up back in the hospital with dehydration.)

As for as gas pains, the best remedy is to walk. It will go away.

The whole first week after surgery I was either napping, sipping or walking. Feel better!

I don't know if this will help you but my daughter rubbed my back for me while I was in the hospital and suffering from gas pain, and she literally burped me like a baby, within a couple of hours, the gas pain disappeared. If you have no one to rub your back, try burping, it might help x

I was told my protein drinks counted toward my fluid requirement too. So if I had a 20 ounce bottle of Isopure, that 20 ounces counted toward my 64 required fluid ounces, plus whatever amounts of protein it had went toward the protein requirement. (Can't remember, it's been too long). So no you don't have to have 86 ounces of fluids. My doctor said one cup of coffee was OK, so even that went toward my liquid goal.

The more you walk, the more the gas pains will go away. I used a heating pad a lot in the first few months for the odd aches and pains. Hang in there, it gets better!
