    Default Roux en Y bypass

    Hi everyone

I had my sleeve done in March 2016. About two months ago I started having severe reflux, went for a scope and it shows the sphincter between the stomach and oeshapagus has disintegrated.

The surgeon said the only option is to have the sleeve converted to a bypass. I have lost all my weight and weigh 61kgs, I am so worried about the op and especially "dumping syndrome" and becoming malnourished.

If anyone could give me some advice or insight I would appreciate it.

    Regards
    Sam

    Hi Samleeh!

My experience with RnY was different in that I originally had one in 2002 that failed due to imperfections in the procedure itself. Not to be worried about that, there have been great strides made since that time and I would expect that you will do well. However...the dumping syndrome you speak of is a very real issue. Although my original RnY was converted into a VSG in September 2017, I have had and still do have dumping syndrome resulting from my previous RnY.

It does not always happen, but what I have found is that anything high in carbs makes me fluid (for lack of a better term). Greasy foods (which we should be avoiding anyway), high volumes of alcohol...those can cause it as well.

For me, it is not as if I wake up in that condition, but based on my dietary intake for the day, that will, in fact, determine my outcome.

    I hope this helps.

    Have a great week!

I am so sorry to hear that. I would probably be a bit worried about losing more from the procedure as well. Have you asked the surgeon about that? My father had bypass in 89 and had dumping syndrome when he ate meat but only for a bit. Hasn't had issues since then. So maybe you'll be lucky? Good luck to you.
