    Default Vitamin B-12

    Hey all

Question: How much do you take daily/weekly?

Currently, taking 5000 mcg a week (Dietician ordered) but I have read up on people taking that DAILY. B-12 is a great vitamin for you, and I'm wondering if I should take that daily instead?

Obviously, I'll follow up with the dietician before doing anything. I just wanted to know what everyone else is taking.

I just wish a bunch of doctors, nurses and dietitians would get together and create a general guideline to follow. The fact that everyone does different things for the same type of surgery baffles me.

Oh funny -- my husband's doctor just told him to go to 1000 mcg daily, so we checked Mayo Clinic and Consumer labs. There are lots of known side effects to too much B12, and apparently it is difficult to absorb more than a small amount.

Do check with your nutritionist if you have any meds that might interefere -- like our PCPs are not always well versed on dietary, sometimes our dietician's are not as well versed on med interaction and side effects as they might be. And of course, nutrition is a shifting target! One day eggs or coffee are badd, and then they are good!

Let us know you turn out! (My husband just had low B12 at labs, he is not bariatric person).

I take B12 only twice a week -- 1,000 mcg. in each tab.

So far, my annual post-WLS blood tests have shown my B12 levels to be well within normal ranges. My fourth surgiversary (and blood tests) are coming up in August, so I'll let you know soon how my B12 looks then.

BTW, I remarked here recently (and in one of my surgiversary posts) that when I took B12 pills every day I had a little facial acne pop up. That's something that CAN happen, but doesn't necessarily happen to everyone.

B12 can be a bit tricky, and individuals' needs for supplementation seem to vary considerably. I haven't read anything about B12 that suggests EVERYONE should supplement themselves identically. I'd be leery of any doctor who had a standard supplementation policy for all bariatric patients.

Others may know more about this than I do. And, of course, I might be wrong.

B 12 - Well I was so tired, so I bought some B12, 2500 mg. I have been taking it everyday for a while. My doctor did bloodwork and my B12 was a huge number. She told me to stop taking B12. Well I thought to myself "she does not know what she is talking about" so I kept taking them. The reason is because I am so tired. So the last few weeks my face has been breaking out, I'm 68 so that should not be happening. After reading a post on here about B12 I stopped a few days ago. Guess what, my face is clearing up. Thanks!!

I take the 2500 B12 once a day. I have not had any issues with it. Mine is a little on the higher end of the spectrum but my PCP is not worried about it.

    Hi
I have my blood tests taken once a month.
I then email them to my team they then advice based on those results.
I have been taking the tablet once every 4 days.
Previous months differed based on the results.
Now I am at the 4 month mark they will check everything again in 3 months time and so on.

Its nice to know why isn't it rather than feel its just their strategy.

I was taking 1000 mg B12 orally (tablets) every day. And when I was tested for B12 my B12 levels were 37 (really low!). The doctor told me that with some bariatric patients B12 doesn't absorb in the stomach properly. So I went on weekly B12 shots for 6 weeks and then changed to monthly B12 Shots. Got retested and my levels are normal to high. She said that she was happy that my levels are good now. I will continue monthly B12 shots, likely for life because the Dr has told me I have one of those sleeve stomachs that don't absorb it.

Yes Onya Ann2... no-one should be supplemented identically!
I have a B12 injection every month because I need it and because I shacked up with my doctor so get personal attention ;-)
(She wasn't really my doctor, but she is now :-)

I'm shacked up with a soon be nurse, is it the same thing?

Thank you all for the responses; I am going to continue to take it weekly, and consult with the NP when I go for my next app on July 16th.

My team has me starting at 500mcg of the B12 tabs daily or 2500 weekly. I go for my 2 week follow up on August 8th. So until then, I do not have the slighest clue what my V12 levels are.

My surgeon prescribed me with weekly B12 shots I gave myself for a year. I have a follow up with him Thursday for the first time since my one year surgiversary and I'm hoping he'll prescribe them again. I need the energy and metabolism boost. I'm WAY overdue for my 2nd surgiversary follow up, just by 4 years. Lol.
